Intel puts a stop to overclocking on non-K Skylake CPUs

Intel, you might wanna button up, your greed is showing

That's rather aggravating. Let's hope that AMD's Zen-series CPUs are worth a damn so that there is real competition for Intel to worry about. If they aren't dominating the market anymore, they don't have as much room to get greedy
 
They did something like this before, people just did not update the bio and kept the ability to overclock...

Yeah exactly, as long as you just don't update it's fine, from here on out others will just buy another brand that has this enabled, or will buy the K version. Anyone who wants to do a proper overclock will get the right parts.
 
Yea, I saw that. But with these new CPUs there should be hardly a need to overclock the CPU. I don't see that as a limiting factor. I have a K CPU and really don't overclock, just a hassle to cool down more, more fan noise, and find the right settings. You're doing 4 GHz on 8 threads, on 22 nm architecture. That's really fast. I remember when we had 400 MHz CPUs and 800 MHz was badass.

Just make sure you're on SSDs and if you want to notice real speeds incorporate an M2 drive in your mobo.

Pretty much. I'm a few years behind with an i5-3570, and a Samsung 840 EVO, but my boot time is still less than 10 seconds and I never have unreasonable loading times. Don't see any point to OC'ing ever, for the majority of people. I know it's certainly a hobbyist thing for a lot

The thing with the non K overclocking was that you did lose some major things with overclocking, mainly being you lose the iGPU. But you did gain almost most of the time a 1Ghz+ boost in clock speeds over stock with low end air coolers (They did run a bit on the warm side tho).

What this did was make Skylake i3 and low end i5 great for budget gaming builds (builds that have a dedicated GPU) while having the ability to have the newest hardware.

To me tho, overclocking is just free performance if you are willing to spend the time tinkering with settings. Some people enjoy that while some rather have that plug and play experience. To each their own :P

Intel did leave the box unguarded again for motherboard company's to open up non k overclocking again. Now they are trying to shut it and people will be pissed again. For shame Intel :/
