Tech Help video editing software

Anyone know of any free video editing software for making youtube videos, etc?

That's a tough one, but Windows Media Editor and YouTube's creator studio work ok. I honestly prefer Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier Elements, but it's up to you.

There isn't a ton of great free stuff out there. A few years ago I recall one came out called Lightworks, but it had a steep learning curve.

I suggest giving the one month trial of Adobe Premiere out... if you use it enough, it is well worth the monthly Creative Cloud payment (or once a year). It is currently the only program I use.

If you plan on getting serious with video editing than I would recommend spending a few dollars. I know a lot of people use Sony Vegas and it is indeed a very powerful editor. But it also costs around 600 bucks and is designed for professionals. There are much better alternatives.

Lightworks is the best "free" video editor I've came across. I say "free" because it will only allow you to render videos up to 720p. If you want 1080p or higher you must buy a licence.

Sony Movie Maker 13 is almost the same thing as Sony Vegas. It's missing a few of the tools that Vegas has but I doubt you'd ever use them. It only costs 80 USD.

PowerDirector is actually my editor of choice, I'll explain that below. It does everything Vegas/Movie Maker can do in a much more user friendly way. As of this post you can buy the Ultra version, a 230 USD value, for 50 USD. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Now the reason why I personally quit using Sony's editor products is because of my graphics card. I recently upgraded from an AMD 290 to a nvidia GTX 970. Sony does not support GPU acceleration for new nvidia cards. Since I edit videos from the same machine I play on I don't want to spend hours using my CPU to render when my graphics card is capable of doing it in a fraction of the time. If you have an AMD card Sony Vegas/Movie Maker works perfectly. But for my needs it was not holding up so I decided to go with PowerDirector. I'm glad I made the switch; it was worth the investment.

If you have a top of the line CPU with a good cooling package on it then it probably wouldn't matter but I don't like the thought of revving my CPU for 10 minutes when I can just rev my GPU for 2.
