CYCLONE1423

Well guys i've been trying to play TF2 alot and it seems to be lagging. But yesterday I played on a server that wasn't one of ours and it was fine. It seems I can't play on our servers because of lag :(. Maybe someone else who knows how to set up a server who's in britain could get one going? That would be a great help. Anyway I just thought i'd mention that, sorry :(.

I had the exact same problem not so long ago. If you haven't already tried, type the following into the developers console:

rate 10000
cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 100

It worked fine for me after doing that.

Try gamerail that work on my computer and that is edgegamers sponsor:) so try it:)

Changing the rate, updaterate and cmdrate has really helped me in other server before so you should try that :)

Yes, for your situation I highly recommend trying Gamerail. Click on the link up in the top right of this page, create and account and download Gamerail. Run Gamerail before joining a server and see if that helps your lag. What is your average ping by the way?

Hah oh my god they deleted my post. You've got to be kidding me.

NO one is allowed to delete posts. either A they move them. B they edit them.

What was said?

I have tried gamerail but it didn't seem to work. I am just about to try what RAF 2008 said, i'll get back to you on how that goes :).

I have tried the commands that RAF 2008 said and the problem is still there although it has decreased. Can anyone suggest some better values? I don't really understand what they do so I don't know what number to put.

I just checked my console, and I have rate 20000, not rate 10000, so I guess trying rate 20000 is worth a go.

It seems to be going good now, it's still a little wobbly now and again but it's nothing I can't play in. Any other suggestions to increase performance are more than welcome :).

I don't know if it applies to you, but if you P2P programs, some ISPs will throttle your connection resulting in very slow connection speeds. If this were the problem, you may hvae lag issues on other servers. Try turning off any p2p programs, and lower your upload speeds (if you have any) and this might solve some lag.

Just another avenue of attack.

Good luck!

A couple weeks ago, I started lagging real bad on the ego server. I don't know if something change on the servers, but it happed all of a sudden. I set my rate to 30000 though it seems the server limits it to 25000. Type net_graph 3 in your console. If you have a large for choke (10 or more) Then your issues have to do with sending/receiving data with the server. After I changed my rate it went from about 40 to between 0 and 8. I do still spike from time to time.

I'm pretty sure I don't have any P2P programs running but thanks for the advice :). What does net_graph 3 do?

net_graph 3 will display a graph at the bottom of the screen that shows you lots of stuff, including your ping, choke, packet loss (I think) and data sent and recieved from the server. It lets you play about with the differnet rates to see what difference any changes have made. If you're not sure what it all means, it will probably just confuse you though.

Those numbers don't quite match up... I'll explain their meaning/usage (with default values):

rate '20000' : Bytes per second sent from server to client. With a high-speed connection, it should probably be 8k-16k (test it out with net_graph). If you are experiencing 'choke' (more data sent than client can receive), lower this value.

cl_updaterate '20' : Number of updates per sec client requests from server. Modern acceptable values are anywhere from 60-100, but keep in mind eGO's server have it capped at 60.

cl_cmdrate '30' : Number of command packets you send to the server per second. It's less of a setting to tweak for ping, but more for responsiveness. The most accepted value tends to be 'avg fps + 10'.

There are other applicable commands (cl_lagcompensation, cl_cmdbackup, cl_interp, cl_smoothtime), but those you definitely shouldn't touch unless you absolutely know what you are doing.

FWIW, as long as you don't go changing the settings in the console, Steam handles it well enough if you set the proper speed in the Steam options.

Ah, thanks for the information nocturne. I had a rough idea of what there meanings were, but clearly got a bit mixed up with what values to use. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

yer iv seemed to get this problem to but seems to come in spikes for no reason it would be good to have a UK server personally I would but then edge would have to buy the server +broad band a electricity pulse we would have to persuade my dad! or of course another way would be to rent from the UK. I will try the stuff u guys have said thanks
