Tech Help Possible MOBO or PSU issue.

So I've been running well on a rig that I've been using for the past 3-4 years. My system consists of a z68 mobo, an i5-2500k, a radeon 6950 2gb card, 8 gigs of ram, and a 750watt powersupply. Everything has been running fine and dandy up until now.

Just recently, I started having to switch my PSU on and off before my power button would allow me to turn on my computer. If I tried to turn it on without first flipping the switch on and off, nothing would happen. No sounds, no lights, nothing. It would only turn on after the switch flicker. During this time, the computer would occasionally boot up with some sort of graphical error, however that was always fixed with a restart.

Now, however, the machine won't even turn on when first flipping the PSU switch. It just acts as if it's not even plugged in. No lights, no sounds, etc... I have tried unplugging everything, then replugging it all in, however that did no good.

I did pull my PSU out to run the paperclip test. This seemed to indicate that my PSU is fine, as the supply turned on, and also turned on the external fan I left plugged in.

Could this just be a faulty PSU, or is this likely a mobo deal? I do plan on testing a friends extra PSU with my mobo in the near future.

I've seen this before and it can be either or. Usually when PSU's go out they go with a bang and smoke but sometimes the switch just goes out. If you can afford it I'd just buy a new mobo and psu.

Test the PSU by following this guide

go down to paper clip test and if the power supply works as its supposed to when you insert the paperclip without you cycling the button on the back then its the mobo. If it doesnt work then its the powersupply that is the problem.

Most (decent) power supplies have a 5 year or better warrant. For instance, my HX Series by Corsair has like a 7 year warranty.

I did a rebuild yesterday. Took it all apart and put it all back together. It turned on once normally. After that I need to hit the clr cmos button on the back of my mobo before it'll turn on. I'm not sure if this is an actual CMOS issue, a power button issue, or something else. My power button works just fine to turn the machine off if i want to. Any ideas? The PC runs fine when it is on.

cmos battery on mother board could be low and need changing

Try turning on your computer by shorting the 2 ON pins on your motherboard, there is a good chance it could just be the switch.

If that does not work, then I am positive it is a PSU problem.

Would you still be of this opinion even now that I can turn on the computer without turning the PSU on and off? In order to turn it on now, all I need to do is hit my clr cmos button on the back of my mobo. I have not needed to flick the PSU switch on and off.

Personally, I'm leaning toward this being a cmos or mobo issue after this revelation.

cmos battery wouldn't affect the entire system. It only holds the time and date and other bios settings.

It's a PSU issue
