Is it allowed for me to threaten to kick people doing annoying things, even if I don't have admin powers?

such as an engi who creates telies so they loop
or a scout who steals a teli from a heavy or soldier

I don't think you should "threat" people with admin powers, especially not when you don't even have admin powers. I also don't think someone would get kicked when they use the teleporter when they are a scout or a spy.
You have admin powers to make our servers punk free not to get rid of everything that annoys you.

obviously i wouldn't actually kick them, both because i don't have admin, and it'd be mean, but the threats normally get them to cease.

was I who warned him about doing that since its not right to impersonate an admin, plus what the guy did isnt that bad..believe he stole a tele.
AND
There were 1-2 admins on at that time, so IMO he should have consulted with them and not say something like "dont do it or I will ban u" (<-not what he said but somewhere along those lines) himself

I'm sure that somebody else will be able to come along behind me and respond more eloquently, and a lot of this is probably covered elsewhere on the site, but the short answer is no.

Threating to take action on a player, when you personally don't have admin powers can often cause more trouble than its worth. Several times, as an admin I've found that some people like to challenge my authority once warned. If this progresses unchecked, it can lead to a severely disruptive server once the troublesome players realize that you can't actually take action on them. It's a lot like pointing an unloaded gun at somebody. Sure, it might scare off some people, but if somebody else comes along with a loaded gun, you're pretty much screwed.

What you can do. You can politely ask them to stop, without specifically threatening to kick a player. Most pubbies won't know whether or not you do have actual admin powers, and many times a polite request along the lines of, "<insert name here>, please watch your language on eGO's servers" will be enough. Hopefully, you'll get an apology, but don't sweat it if you don't. Simply letting the players know that there is a watchful eye on the server can make a lot of difference.

What if a player continues to be disruptive? Contact an eG or an eGO immediately. eG's have the power to kick and mute, but eGO's also have the power to ban. Feel free to add me to your Steam Friends list, as well as any other admin in the clan. If you have a problem that requires action, just PM one of us, and if we're available, we are all more than happy to hop in a server and take care of the issue. Our "punk free" servers are the reason that most of us joined eGO, and we have all made a commitment to keeping them clean. Just like you are trying to do. :) I also encourage you to try to get to know some of us in server or on Vent. The better we know you, the more we will be able to trust your word on issues.

Other ways to contact an admin? If you can't contact an admin on your Steam Friends list, make a post in the chatbox and/or try to contact somebody in Vent. With as many eG's and eGO's we have around here, you're bound to attract somebody's attention. I hesitate to suggest you go as far as posting in the forums since I myself am not sure what the Council's policy on that is, but I can hazard a guess that nobody will be mad at you if you are requesting admin on a server that's gotten horribly out of hand.

For further reading, I suggest you check out the following threads

Lastly, I want to thank you for asking this question. I'm sure this is a question that's come up before, and it also indicates that you are just as committed to keeping our servers clean as the rest of us. That's a good thing. :D

So, any more questions?

Let me address your examples since I didn't in my previous post. As far as teleport stealing is concerned, while it is annoying, it is not a kickable or even warnable offense. That's a part of the game. Deal with it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about looping teleporters, though. If you are referring to teleporters whose exits are close in proximity to the entrance, that too is not a kickable or warnable offense. While the exit may not be in an offensively useful position, just because you find it annoying, that doesn't mean that it's not allowed.

Lastly, let me reiterate that if there is an eG or an eGO on the server, you should always, always, always let them handle any issues on server. If you see something that you feel an admin should take action on, then you need to alert them via admin chat, as discussed in the "Contacting a friendly admin in game" thread I linked to above.

very well said respawn... i would agree with you 100% percent and cant stress enough let the eGO, or eG handle things unless other wise told.... and those offence are no where near kickable/bannable... as stated before they are annoying but thats part of the game

To paraphrase House; "Never threaten unless you're ready to deliver. It makes you look weak."

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Placing teleports right next to each other? In which case - some engies will do it intentionally (especially across the stairs in 2Fort) because spies get hung up on them and have to jump over them or sap them.

Looping teleporters to trip up your own team is not okay. An example is putting your exit on a higher step at spawn and your entrance on a lower step. Thus when your team tries to go down, they get teleported back up again and again. This can be done on any critical pathway, and is on par with exploiting--it's a server disruption and may result in a ban if the player does not immediately correct his or her "joke."

Respawn's answer is great. You have the badge, but if you pretend to have the gun and they call your bluff, they're going to make your life very difficult. Don't threaten, but sometimes advisors who can't be in game are watching in console, and we'll boot unpleasant players for you, thus giving your polite warning a lot more force.

Those don't really seem like 'bootable' offenses... just random noob stupidity. Maybe none of my business, but from my admin experience elsewhere, often the best action is doing nothing... otherwise you just end up picking a fight. I find shame to be the best solution...

One of the reasons I play on eGO server and not 'comparable' communities like Lotus, is because you guys tend to maintain a professional atmosphere, without the need to be too overly involved. With a couple hundred admins, each with their own views and personalities, it's quite an accomplishment to maintain.
