My internet has gone from bad to down right terrible. First i couldn't play games and now i can barely watch netflix. Sometimes I can't even browse the internet. I'm paying $60 a month for up to 40 mbps (good luck with that). $50 for the internet and $10 for renting the modem/router. The modem/router is an Arris DG860 and is hard wired to my computer. Worst part is this ISP is said to be the best one in this town that I moved to called Cable One. I'm getting up to 65% packet loss. Any suggestions on what to do?

If you do a continuous ping to your home toy router, do you get the same drops?

Since you are on Cable, you might have to have someone come onsite to check the signaling, if your problems aren't at hop 1.

good suggestion. Just checked my default gateway and received no packet loss with >1ms on a 25 bump test. Really wish it would've been that :(

Did the new ISP install the cabling in your household, or was it preexisting? Might have some bad splitters sitting in-between that modem router combo and the ISP.

Yup Call the ISP tell them you are experiencing packet loss so bad you can't use the internet. they will schedule a tech to come out and verify your internal wiring. They should be able to change any bad splices or connectors along with any bad jacks that could also be causing the issue.

If you need ammo for your ISP,

download UO trace (an EA tool):
https://eaassets-a.akamaihd.net/eahelp/documents/uotrace.exe
  1. Say no to finding Server List
  2. go into Options and make sure advanced is selected, then click settings
  3. Set Ping buffer in bytes to 1300 - hit Okay
  4. type an IP address into the box on the screen (preferibly of somewhere you're trying to reach)
  5. Click the fourth button "Trace route"
  6. click the voodo doll "pool"
  7. Wait 10-15 minutes, and look at the results, this will tell you exactly where the packet loss is occuring

Edit:
couple of additional notes: anything with 100% packet loss is probably just not responding to ICMP requests and isn't anything to worry about - additionally if every server receives packet loss it's likely that it's something between your router and ISP (house cabling, router itself, etc)

Also make sure your ethernet adapter drivers are updated. I was getting slower speed because of that. What Pred said is correct, your ISP will send a technician and test your line. You can also ask them for a credit for the period of time you had deficient service.

if they don't fix it then look at getting a` different provider

Always switch off any antivirus progra!Ms n other programs they cause me fps drops n crashes but when I turn em off M a pro lol

Go to "Tools" and then "Line Quality - Ping Test"

Run the test. This is the best internet test tool you can run for your problem.

This test is the greatest because it gives you a trace route from an external server to your computer.

This test is the best because:
1.) you stop the level 1 tech from giving you the standard bull about you rebooting your route, rebooting your computer.
2.) Because the trace your from the external server to your computer eliminates totally it is your router and computer.

It should show in the trace route which router is choking. Most time it will show your ISP routers choking between the internet POP and your computer.

You need to run this at different times and for a couple days. It should show the same router choking. This eliminates any question what is the problem, and tell the Level 1 tech you demand to send these trace routes to them as proof. You will be surprised how fast your get routed to Level 2 and get a trouble ticket assigned.

Best option.

Hook directly into the modem, skip the router. Run traceroute and ping, and do it several times through a day if you can. See if it happens more at night when a lot of people in your town are online or if it happens all day. Does it happen on a specific hop along the line... you might just hit a really busy trunk. Try different servers... if you can find something east coast then midwest, south, west coast.

With traceroute you are going to find what hop is causing the issue.....if it's you > ISP then get them out to test the lines and possibly repair...

beyond that you are kind of screwed.

Alright ladies and gents, looks like I'm back online! Unfortunate for yall :)

Really appreciate all the help. THANKS!
