Official eGO EGO Tests Out Discord

I don't have a phone capable of downloading the app, the download was having problems, the browser feature doesn't allow you to talk unless the primary window.

I am not a fan of discord, tried it with some friends before.

it's not bad so far, i think it's smooth and graphically more pleasing. but of course there will be a few features that it won't have right away. change always takes time, but it's definitely something for us to try out. i like how you can go from browser, to mobile app to desktop app.

the only things so far i didnt like which i'm sure they will work on was no away button, and that when we tried the kick from server button it removed the eGO group from my app so I had to get that link again. i suppose that'll cut down on innocent kicks though =P

There's a couple of options for this:

  1. Use the "Deafen" button as it achieves the same thing as the "away" button in team speak
  2. The system will automatically show a "yellow" circle on your avatar when you've been inactive for awhile
  3. eGO has an "auto-afk" piece setup that will throw you into the DAK channel after being away for ~ 1 hour

I've been using discord as my primary form of online communication with another group of friends for a long while. We find it to be extraordinarily better than the TS alternative. Not forcing a download on someone is a very helpful idea to get more people involved in the community and allowing members to see a list of their friends who are in and what games they are in is extremely helpful. Ultimately I can see this test ending positively however many users will need to get used to the move and there may be growing pains.

Also the monetary advantages are noted in my opinion.

Thank you for this awesome guide!

However, I only use Discord for chat communications.

All voice comms, I use the normal eGO teamspeak.

My reason?
I was DDoS'ed once I started using their voice comms during a livestream on Twitch a couple weeks back.

My overall opinion of Discord?
I don't like it. 3/10.

I hate discord for something as large as Edge Gamers. When it goes down, we can't do anything about it. It's not a dedicated server. Furthermore, we don't know who is hosting our data in Discord, but we do in TS. Sure, it makes it easy to moderate text chat, but what if someone comes in and spams porn links (as they are bound to do eventually.) It's a free service to sign up for, and you can make as many accounts as you wish. There's no way to IP ban from what I know. Sure, it's free. Sure, you can even access it on the web browser of your choice. Sure, we wouldn't have to deal with server upkeep. This app is not made for gaming clans of our size. This app is made for a SMALL group of friends to play games together.

Oh, what's that? Twitch streamers use this with a population of 1000+?

Well, Twitch streamers don't have to moderate their Discord. We have to moderate TeamSpeak already, so with less admining tools, it's an awful decision for us. If someone posts a link to something obscene in one channel, everyone can see it. Everyone will make a big deal about it. In TeamSpeak, if someone posts a phishing link or something, not everyone in the entire clan will be tempted to click it. Just the people in the channel at the time.

Those are my two cents, and to add: If we switch, I'm not going to Discord.

I have used discord in the past for MMO raids and such, but we seemed to have more issues with it than not, and we had maybe 15 people at most on.

-After about an hour or so in, we would all have robotic-like voices and there was no way to fix it aside from re-starting the browser. It can also get choppy if you're too far from the server.

-The mic/sound would sometimes cut out and we would all have to constantly toggle mic/sound on-off until we heard each other again.

-Many hiccups/disconnects randomly, not in time with high traffic times and such.

These are just some of the smaller issues we've had in it and stopped using it. Sure it's as secure as anything else on the internet and it's pretty much free. Just opinions, so don't get too offended or anything if you support Discord. I'll deal as it comes, but if there is still choices to be had, considerations must be taken.
Thanks! <3

I downloaded the android app, looks cool for chat hopefully get to test out the voice later

I tried it with our server filling group, the voice quality was terrible for me. I will not be using this

Discord is a great idea for steamers, a group of friends, or teams looking for feedback, also it replaced the need for RaidCall; however, Discord is not a good idea for administration and lacks an API that we could use to grow EdgeGamers to its full potential. Discord's banning system bans off names and not IPs meaning all it takes is literally opening up a new tab to bypass your ban. Overall we should stick with TeamSpeak because currently is the best thing on the market for a large community with a awesome API Library that we can use.

Discord is not meant for a community. It might be aesthetically pleasing but honestly, it's not expandable, it's UI is gorgeous but is way to complicated (compared to TeamSpeak). Teamspeak has full customizability and isn't easily exploited.

Whereas Discord, it's UI is honestly clunky, whereas it's modernized, it's disorganized. It's not the right atmosphere for a community, it's meant for a group of friends who are just wanting to play a game together or a big group just hanging out. It's API, and permissions, are lacking in basically every sense.

Teamspeak is expandable, user-friendly, fully customizable, and secures user information and other information that is able to exploited in some manner.

Discord is not expandable, it's not that user-friendly, it's definitely not customizable and it's 10000% not secure.
