Tea has a long, rich history that dwarfs that of coffee. By most accounts tea drinking began in the Shang Dynasty, in ancient China. The Shang Dynasty ruled from 1600-1000 B.C. To put that in perspective, Theseus, the Theseus, king of Athens and subject of legend, the guy who navigated the labyrinth, ruled Athens around 1230 BC. The Exodus, the one in the Bible, is supposed to have happened around 1400 BC. King Tut ruled in the mid 1300s. The friggin' alphabet was allegedly invented by the Phoenicians in the 1500s. Tea MAY BE OLDER THAN THE ALPHABET. This gives tea a vast and lush history, a constant through time almost 3000 years before coffee was introduced.
It was originally used for medicinal purposes, and doctors today still research ancient teas to find better cures for ailments when they can't rely on modern medicine. Think about that - tea has been effective medicine for 3500 years. Since before time immemorial (July 6, 1189), Tea has been the favored drink of many emperors and scholars.
The history of Tea does not stay in the East. It makes its way by trade to the west, first to India. In the 17th century, the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza brought the habit of tea-drinking to the British court when she married King Charles II. Tea has since become a staple of British culture. They have an entire period of time in the day devoted to Tea. Tea is regularly consumed all over the world, in many more places than coffee. One of the most important protests in American history wasn't the "Boston Coffee Party". The British love for Tea spread to America, and is forever set in history as having a part in nation-forming. Tea is the drink of the masses and the beverage of the wise.
In Turkey, Tea remains the most popular hot drink despite Turkey's long history with coffee. In Russia, the vast majority of people consume tea daily, whether in the urban areas or the rural countryside. In the Far East, countless people devote their whole lives to the art of tea, spending decades perfecting the art of brewing and serving tea.
There are thousands of varieties of tea, from many different plants. Its uses range from recreational, to medicinal, to energetic, to just plain enjoyment. It is the most consumed drink in the world after water. It is perhaps the most important beverage in the history of mankind. It is Tea.
(I don't even like tea that much)
