gaming laptop

It's not a bad machine, the IdeaPad's are always nice....but I have a hard time spending that much money to game on a laptop. I never travel so I have no use for one, however that being said that's not what you asked. The GHz seems a little low for an i7, I feel like you could get a better processor with an i5 and run over 3.0 I'm so glad you went with Intel and Nvidia over AMD though i cannot stand that brand, and when I used to sell computers I would always steer people away from anything AMD lol! I would say shop around a bit more, you can definitely get your moneys worth with a different rig. JUST PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM ALIENWARE

Seems like Alienware you are just buying the name more than anything.

All mobile Intel i7/i5 HQ/U will be on the lower end for GHz because of them wanting to keep the TDP down to help on the cooling of the laptop.

Does not say on the links you posted, but the CPU should boost to 3.5 on the first core when turbo boost is applied.

For the price you are looking at you will not find much better then that. Unless you want to spend a bit more and not have an SSD to get a laptop with a 970m.
 
The reason I warn against Alienware is because Dell owns it now, and their product has turned to crap, its not the same product it was.

My suggestions: buy an SSD and another 8 GB DD3 stick of RAM and you'll have a comparable laptop to the Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 for anywhere between $100-150 less. Definitely enjoying my laptop; able to play Fallout 4, Dying Light, and Planetside 2 without issue. Battery life is anywhere between 7-10 hrs depending on usage; about 3-4 hrs for gaming (did a solid 3 hours of Fallout 4 and teamspeak talking before I realized that I forgot to plug the lappy in).
