You'll need an IRC client to connect, like mIRC, or the ChatZilla extension for FireFox. Typically it'll prompt you for the server you want, that's where you type the irc.gamesurge.net, and once you're connected just enter #edgegamers into the Join Channel dialog if you get one.
You can also do it the old fashioned way from the console, just type:
/server irc.gamesurge.net
/join #edgegamers
Voila!
