.
I was stationed at Colchester for just over one year then I was transfered to London to our Head Quarters in Kensington Barracks This was handy as I lived only about 30 minutes Way. I settled down very quickly and was given a position as driver in our MT section, I rode a motorcycle some of the time, mainly as security when delivering wages to the various barrack's in London. But my main duties were driving a 1 ton truck, this was actually much bigger but the army always lowered the size. The tyres were desert tyres with a wide tread making it like a bald tyre on the road. One day I had a corporal as passenger , it was wet and leaves on the road made it dangerous, as I was turning right the backend started to slide and I had to fight to hold it on the road, well the corporal next to me panicked and went to jump out but he was going to jump into the sliding truck, I grabbed his collar and held him back and straightend the truck up at the same time. When he calmed down he realizes what a stupid thing he had done and could not stop thanking me. I had a friend for life.
Our Commanding Officer was a Major, he was a nice guy, very friendly with all the other MP's, but he retired a month or so later and we had a Major from the Tank Corp take over and unfortunately he knew nothing about the Military Police. When a MP was brought up on charges he gave them a Reprimand (one week not wearing civvy's and be in barracks by 2400 hrs) no matter what they did.
Shortly after he came I had to do day guard and that meant wearing dress uniform (blue's) and whilst standing at the gate the CO's driver came around the corner and flashed his light's a passenger on board. I walked out into the road and stopped the traffic so he could drive straight in, I turned and waved the waiting cars to proceed, went back to the guard room. About 15 minutes the duty sergeant came up to me and told me I was on Order's at 1200 hrs.
At 1200 hrs I was marched into the OC's office and the charge of not saluting the OC when he came in was read out . I was asked if I had any thing to say ,I said "I would not accept any punishment he gave me" He went ballistic at me and told the RSM to get me out.which he did, I went back to my duty as guard.
A little while later the CSM came and told me I was on Orders again at 1600 hrs, and he added I that "I had done the right thing"
1600 hrs inside the CO office the charge was read out again and he asked if I had anything to say I said no I had said it at 1200 hrs, he was not very happy but asked me why I took that attitude, I said "as a MP on point duty I did not have to salute officer's as it might cause an accident by a driver thinking I had waved him foreward.
He screamed a Reprimd at me and I turned and marched out.
The RSM came out and said I was right and to keep a low profile. What I did was a court marshall offence but the RSM told him I was right.
I went staight up to my room and changed into civvy's and went home, passed the OC on the square and said goodnight to him.
We had a RSM "regimental sergeant Major"
and a CSM "company sergeant major". Not sure if you guy's have the same.
I will post some more but please dont get offended by my waffleing.
