Last part of my army service,
Whilst I was in training there was a young Scott's guy Named Cairns who was going for officer training if he finished this course, he was given the temporary rank of corporal to control the squad and like all people of higher rank he kept picking on one guy and making him loose his confident's, I asked him to leave him alone as he was doing his best, which he did, the guy bucked up and passed the course, so did Cairns who did go to officer training. Well about six month's before I was to be discharged a first lieuftenant arrived at our barrack's, that right it was Cairns the Scotts guy. When I first spoke to him he shook my hand and asked me how I was, he then said when we were alone I could call him "jock" but only when alone, I said ok and we got on very well together. When he was Duty Officer at the weekend's he would let me take the Land rover and go visit my girl friend, which was good by me. One day he was on duty and wanted to go to the RMP Territorials Hall where they were having a dance night, just a few miles from my home, when we arrived he met some friend's and told me I could go home with the Landrover, which again suited me.
One day I was duty driver using my one ton truck and I did a lot of running around delivering stuff needed for the King and Queen of Thailand who was on a royal visit.
I returned to the barrack's about 1900 hrs and was told I had to take squad of my mates to Clarence House where the Queen Mother lived, she had a big reception for King and Queen of Thailand and my mates were security for her. I was in my battle dress and the parade was late so Officer in charge told me there was no time for me to go and put my Blue's on, so I took them to Clarence House in Battle dress.
When we arrived the Sargeant in charge told me to keep hidden in the truck. As time went buy I fell asleep among all the Over coat's.
When the King and Queen left the Queen mother invited all the staff to have super with her, when all the staff were settle she asked the sargeant if every one was there, he said no the driver was outside because I was in battle dress, she said that did not matter and he was to fetch me in. So I had a great super in the same room as the Queen Mother, and she was and is the only Royal I liked and respected.
Sorry I have bored you all with my army story's, not like war but to me I had many good story's I could tell.
Next I will move onto my life on the London Ambulance service.
