Tech Help Wireless Extender

What kind of extender should I get, whoever is knowledgeable in this kind of area.

I just moved and my dad hates wires in the house and the wireless is across the house downstairs where the internet is so bad that I can almost not even search stuff up.

I have looked on Amazon and I saw this:

A wireless extender that will help out the wireless signal but I do not think that I should get it and just get a guy from my ISP to fix the internet and whatnot. But if I do not get that choice I will have to get an extender.

Have you considered upgrading your router or wireless card? What are you currently using?
 
If you have an Apple router you can get airports to boost the signal in certain areas of the house. Not sure about other forms of routers and such as we use the apple ones.

I don't have a wireless card, I have a Netgear usb receiver that I never ended up using just in case my cable died on me because it is an old ethernet cable. The distance from my computer to the router is about 50+ feet and it either has a really slow connection, not able to connect or something else. Once I have the money I will get a wireless card. Any suggestions on a good one?

For now I just need to use my laptop and be near the internet. Until I call my ISP for someone to come to fix the cables in the house and be able to have the box upstairs I will have to just use my laptop.

But other than that I am just going to have to wait.
 
Not sure what you mean by the ISP fixing the cables. Are you saying you have DSL internet (it goes through your phone jack)? Or do you have broadband cable internet? If you have cable, you don't need them to fix anything, you can put your modem anywhere an active coax is.

That is the thing none of them upstairs work, the only one is across the house downstairs. The other coax spot is not activated and I don't want it in the room that it is. I asked Comcast and they said a guy can come to add another one and have the cables go in the wall so that there are no cables in the hallway.

I don't know, to be honest, I have to think about it and see what my options are when I call them again or talk to the guy that comes. If worse comes to worse I will get a wireless extender or purchase a wireless card and not a USB one.

the netgear extenders are the best, even wireless cards are still going to suffer, extenders area the best way to go longer distances with minimal impact. i'd recommend getting the same brand of your router ,or if not use netgear.
 
ive been using a wifi repeater which we got for free and then used a TP cable so that the connection is direct from the repeater and i can say that using TP cables rather than relying on wifi signal is a much more better option when your using a repeater also others can still connect to the repeater too

Yeah, I will get something like that when the times comes. My brother is going to be bringing a wireless network card so that I can try that out to see how the connection is, hopefully it is better than the USB one that I have.

If anything I am just going to wait and talk with Comcast about some options ( once I get a job ).
 
Do you mean they are not physically there, or that they don't work? If your house is wired, upstairs and down, then your upstairs is disconnected at the splitter, trace the coax and reconnect.

We used an engenious wireless access point/range extender and it worked extremely well, although it would be overkill for your use. We used it outdoors and had it wired to the modem, mounted on a pole on the roof. I believe it was directional.
 
There is one port upstairs but not activated. Other than that there is nothing else upstairs, and the only one port downstairs is a splitter on, so that the tv and internet can be connected.

Just wanted to drop my 2 cents in here with my solution. I actually went with an "Ethernet Extender" which works by running through the actual electric wiring in your dwelling. Might be worth a look, especially if you have a lot of wifi signals in your area like we do, or need a higher up/down connection.
 
Well once I have the money I will be able to do what I need to to get the better wired internet and get the speeds that I have gotten in the past. At some point I am going to save up for a year of gigabit internet, in which it is going to be blazing fast but idk, tbh I don't really need that fast internet but it would be cool to have for a bit.
