mIRC Tutorial
Here's a more detailed tutorial on how to download and use mIRC for those of you who are new to it.
mIRC Tutorial
If you do not already have mIRC, you need to download it. Go to http://mirc.com to download it for free! After you have downloaded and installed the program, open it up.
If the mIRC Options menu does not pop up when you open the program, go to Tools > Options (Alt+O).
When the menu opens, there will be a few fields to fill in: Name, E-Mail, and Nickname.
Before you can connect, you need to register an account so that you can authenticate yourself on the server. When you are authenticated, you can be added to user lists, join all channels that are not passworded and or invite only, and more. Go to http://gamesurge.net/createaccount and fill out the information needed. After completing this form, your account will be registered and your authentication password will be e-mailed to you. Please allow some time for the delivery of this e-mail.
Click the + next to Connect (on the left side if it is not already), then select Servers. Find GameSurge in the drop down menu under IRC Network (Note: The majority of American teams and organizations use GameSurge; Europeans mainly use Quakenet). Under IRC Server, choose your location. Either US or Europe will work where ever you may live. Double click the server you would like to use, and mIRC will automatically take you back to the main options screen. Once you are back to the Connect screen, click and away you go! You can now close the options for the time being.
Before you join any channels lets go ahead and get your authentication setup. You will want to open the options back up, and navigate to Connect > Options and click the Perform button.
When the new window pops up, click the Enable Perform on Connect check box, and then click the Add button. Scroll down and double click GameSurge. Make sure the Network drop down says GameSurge, and then you will want to enter this into the text box:
/authserv auth yourusername yourpassword
//mode $me +x
/join #edgegamers
The first line is a network command that allows you to authenticate on the GameSurge network The second is a command that hides your IP Address. The third is optional but highly recommended if you want to auto-join the channel. You can later duplicate this command to auto-join any channel you wish.
If you're not able to join the channel (+r error), it is because you are not authenticated. For a more in depth explanation on how to authenticate your account when you connect to GameSurge, go to http://gamesurge.net/newuser. After you properly authenticate you can now join #edgegamers. Type /join #edgegamers in any window that is open and hit Enter.
Once you are in the channel, you will see a list of names and the chat window.
If you would like to Private Message someone on the list, double-click their name. A new window will automatically open up for the PM (private message). When someone PM's you back, you will see a blinking box on your Channel Bar (if the window is minimized). Click it and you can start talking to the person.
Once you have had some time to get used to mIRC, if you do not know how to use it already, there are some more advanced commands that you can use to make your chat time better. Go to GameSurge and hover over Support > User Guides and get to researching.
