I am wondering if eGO community is interested in discussing the engineering class. I am thinking either write a short guide or have question/answer type of thread to help new and old players who are interested in playing the class.

Any comments and inputs are greatly appreciated.

Engi's should get a map of all friendly sentry gun placements and their health status! :O

My best advice is do not desert your buildings unless you are sure of what you are doing. Spies lurking love to sap sentries that are unguarded. Don't be afraid to whack your teammates to check whether they really are your teammates. Put your sentry in a safe spot (not out in the open, it could get destroyed from afar by a soldier). Sentries covering each other is a good idea, and you also want to put sentries in places where they are not expected so people run out and get killed.

Put one teleporter at your spawn and another at the front lines. There are some places in maps that most engineers stick to (example: sewers in 2fort). Teleporters are greatly appreciated, especially on maps like dustbowl where you want to get in the action right away.

A good idea is to put a dispenser near an sg. You can get metal from a dispenser and immediately transfer it to an sg. Some people would say this is bad; it's like putting your eggs all in one basket :).

The shotgun is powerful, but don't be afraid to use the pistol. It can help as well in medium range situations. Fire it quickly.

Don't stand still. Make life harder for spies. Observe where other engineers are setting up and plan accordingly.

If you are really ambitious and are playing a ctf map, try to set up a teleporter and sg in the enemy intel room. It's a great feeling (of pwnage!!). I've done it before, and it really annoyed the enemy team. You need lots of teamwork to actually punch into the intel room and clear the way so you can set up. Once an enemy team set up in our intel room. But, we waited outside of the intel room and didn't allow them to leave. Yet, setting up in an enemy intel room is still very rewarding.

Good luck with engineer everyone. It is really fun.

Hope this helps.

We dedicated Engies are a dying breed! Enemies getting smarter while our poor Sentries are still the same dumb, wall-hacking, aim-botting inanimate machines they once were 7 months ago. But never fear! They key nowadays is to leave a Level 1 or 2 (never 3) in odd positions throughout maps. You'll get maybe 3 or 4 kills, but thats enough to thin out your opponent's team, even if its only for 10 seconds.

What was once a common sight of an Engy wedged between two slabs of metal, its much more effective now if you separate your buildings. Decreases the chance of an enemy "breaking your stupid crap." The only exception is if youre base is coming under heavy attack, where a Dispenser behind you is vital. :O

Oh, one more thing. A Level 3 Sentry only has roughly "200 HP." When you see a Demo lobbing stickies, shoot them away with your pistol! It takes 3 stickies to turn everything, including you, into tiny chunks of flesh and steel.

One final advice. If you see an uber rushing towards you, whether it be a Pyro, Demo or Soldier, get the hell out of there! Their damage output, especially from the Pyro, at close range far exceeds your ability to repair the buildings. Heavies arent so much as a problem if they're foolish enough to fire from mid-range. But up close, or around a corner, just bail. No point in sticking around and dying. Plus it means you'll be able to intercept them with another Sentry down the map.

The best advice though is to watch this Engy video by Daedulus himself :D [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxodkFM8N1U[/ame]

I don't even think that the how to engineer video from Evildaedalus is helpful...
Anyway, the engineer is my most played and favourite class. I'm going to post something helpful when I'm back from school. xD

Excellent video. I wish I'd discovered it earlier in my engie career! =) One thing that can help is work in teams. I love working with another engie, especially someone I know and trust. I've had some fantastic success that way.

Let your team know where you are and when you need help. Chances are they're willing to back you. If they aren't, sometimes it's better just to respawn as a pyro. =)

I'm too committed to engineer, and know all the stuff, but I refuse to move my sentry forward in Dustbowl when I see 8 more of me.

Of thing I've found useful, especially in tight places such as 2Fort/Convoy intel room: Place teleports right in the main doorways (best if there are only 2 or 3 ways to get in). Spies can usually never hold themselves back at the sigh of an out-of-place teleporter to sap. But placing them there, and having them sap is a great advantage to you. You may lose the teleporters, but it will either:

1. Let you know they are coming into the room, and gives you time to attack and stop them before they damage anything important,
2. Scare them away if you start running towards that area.

I've found that to be a nice effective way at stopping spies, although again, it does usually work best in a smaller environment.

In 2fort, I often use buildings as a sign of where spies/other enemies are. Also, here's another tactic that ALWAYS surprises people.

Build your sentry in the small corner across from the door of the basement resupply room. Get out your wrench. When the enemy comes down the long stairs, they'll try to strafe back and forth and shoot at your sentry, using that corner as cover. Their backs are facing that resupply room door... so when someone starts shooting at your sentry, pop out of that room and club them!!!

I've gotten soooo many kills that way. :-P

Well engie is my most played class and i really enjoy it. I'd follow the same advice as hard hat dotting lvl 1/2 sg in odd places. Key thing to remember as an engineer: dont build too close to corners soldiers and demomen can shoot round them.(my first post so if i done something wrong let me know)

Later Medic hunter

wow that video really helped em, until now the engineer was my least played class, but know I want to start dominating with him. engies ftw.

All I have to say is two sentences....
Do not underestimate the power of a level one sentry
Like all things in this universe, sentry guns are impermanent, so do not be afraid to abandon and rebuild.

There's some simple things about playing an engineer that are often overlooked, for one if you can have a wall to your back and still be in an effective spot do it. If your facing capable spy's and they can get behind you it's gonna be very easy to take you out. When setting up i generally make a dispenser first, if there's not alot of metal around it's the only way to go. If there is metal around Grab it! Even if it's only 41 metal it still adds up quickly and will help you get set up sooner and more efficiently. Here's a big no no in my book, if there's metal around you never take from a fellow engineer's dispenser it might not seem like a big deal but you're potentially crippling his ability to defend his position. I help the majority of people who are building near me but especially those who try to avoid taking from my dispenser. Now that we're on the subject of helping your fellow engineers, do it! When you help them you are much more likely to receive help later yourself, so if it gets you to do it, think of it from that perspective.

Paranoia is an engineer's best friend, if you assume everyone's a spy your buildings will last much longer. If building teleports is out of the question at the moment use them offensively, most spy's sap as they go so if you put something in their way they will sap it, and now you have an early warning system. If your on the prowl run into your teammates, if they're spy's it'll be like hitting a brick wall, this is especially helpful on 2fort. I say especially 2fort because in many positions you get to see everyone who's coming.

Never be afraid to try new spots, often the most unlikely spots yield the best results.

p.s. might right more later but in the meantime i've gotta get ready head out, happy hunting and hope someone found this helpful!

If you're a Demo, counter their stickies with your own! :D Place two near the Engie's Sentry, and detonate them. It should send the enemies stickies flying away. Also works well against repeated spy attacks. 'Spy sappin' mah sentry' 'Right-click" 'KABOOM' xD
