New Language Rule

I'm sorry I couldn't make the meeting that announced the new rule on language. I asked that those attending the meeting be told this rule doesn't mean we'll allow F'bombs to be dropped all over the site and in game, but instead an ambiguous message was conveyed. However, Legend has done a great job at defining the mission and answering questions, and I thank him for that.

The discussion on a rule change started in a CM meeting and most of us were onboard. Those that were against said they understood the vision and were onboard. So Hammer and I drafted a simple rule that kept our punk-free principles in place while modifying one aspect of how we admin. The rule met no objections from CMs. The convo was then taken to a Leadership meeting with similar outcome: Most in favor, and very few against.

I expect a segment of our membership to object, as this is not business as usual for EGO. You'll probably see a transition to more of an adult community, where children are welcome, but only with the acceptance of parents, and the best admins in the gaming world can focus moderating efforts on disrespect and not excluding participation from others just because of words on a list.

Then I would at least expect our label of "family-friendly gaming" to be removed, as that is no longer what we offer.

Could you please explain how we're no longer a "family-friendly gaming" community?

I'm not speaking for them, but saying "****, I died" isn't family friendly. We are driving our younger audience away from our server with this, meaning it isn't friendly for all ages. It isn't socially acceptable for me to say "Shit dude, you got some nice shoes" to an 11 year old, is it? Why is the internet different? Is it because the parents aren't there to tell you otherwise? If so, when parents find do out, they are not going to be too happy with our community and the child.

Children make up a good portion of this community. Parents have finally decisions on what they do. Swearing doesn't sit well with parents. We aren't close friends with these parents, we are people on the internet. They do not trust us fully. Not trusting us fully, and allowing swearing, from people they don't know, puts a bad reputation out for us.

This is just my input on it. I agree and disagree with certain parts of the rule, but will uphold it in the servers.

EDIT: With all I said, maybe saying "We are a mature community" would be more acceptable. The reason I say mature is because you said it yourself, we are picking up mature rated games, that are not family friendly to all ages. I personally, do not like that a game rated E (for all ages) now allows swearing in our servers. I've never seen a minecraft server allow swearing, and have been called a family friendly server at the same time, because it isn't. It isn't kid friendly, which falls under family. It has also been said, we work as a community, not individual divisions, so since this is effecting one division, it is going to effect all divisions.

Couldn't have said it better.

I'm just going to point out that this is at the bottom of the website homepage and I'm sure somewhere else too.

What you guys don't get is we ARE a mature gaming community and we HAVE been since the beginning. You're playing games that are rated M doing violent things with body parts flying everywhere... and you're up in arms about cursing which I'm SURE kids in this generation hear most of their day.

This is a place to cool off and play some games with mature people. If your kids are too young to hear cursing, then they probably have a COPPA form which means you KNOW what you're exposing them to.

Minecraft is rated E
DODS/TF2/CS are rated M, but not for strong language.
Online interactions are not rated by the ESRB
Mature gamers follow the posted rules they agreed to when joining.
I expect most regulars in DOD:S will continue playing the same without swearing. Haven't heard much swearing at all yet. And none from regulars.

Guys, we live in the real world, although I really don't cuss myself unless I'm fired up.... this is the world we live in, in fact, many of the games themselves have players yelling profanities (i.e. Battlefield 4). I think this is the right decision for EGO and to focus on the Mature gaming environment. Yes we are family friendly, by making sure that bullying, disrespect and other things aren't permitted, but an occasional profanity here or there is part of life. As long as its not in bad taste, its part of the language and is used to convey emotions or feelings. I speak three languages, and I can tell you that the LEAST expressive is English. Sometimes using some adult language is needed.... think about how versatile the F word is. On that note, I leave you with one of my favorite comedians of all time.

I'd have to get the numbers from Firez or Jade/Lobs, but I'm pretty sure that there is a significant number of children that do not have a COPPA and therefore cannot join EGO. This however, does not limit their ability to play on our servers. Those are still open to the public.

Personally, I do not believe the new language rule will cause much if any issue, but I can most definitely see where Misterboy, Daa and Matt98 are coming from. To my understanding, the Minecraft servers have always been considered 'kid-safe' and I have seen them advertised in that fashion.

This real world you talk of if you go into a police station and start swearing even once or twice to t he officer. See how fast their tune turns on you. Go walk past your boss and say this is bleeping dumb see his reaction if any other customers are near by. Let me know how that works out for ya and tell me how the real world handles it:) IMO however we need to STOP this already.

WE are the police / boss of the servers. We are the ones who keep it punk free in the end its how we admin approach a situation. You have kids around and are on Minecraft simply say hey mate i know its allowed but please keep in mind we have kids around. Most mature people will go oh sorry mate and thats the end of it. If they start a fight over something that innocent they are not a mature gamer and don't belong anyways. Its a common sense thing which is what we are all suppose to admin with. We are not here to be extreme or rude its a fun experience for all. With that said i wish it was moved into either bit slower then we did or bit more explanation to get people on board before bringing it public and causing this entire dramafest that really shouldn't be here.

Yes, we are a mature gaming community, I'm fine with that. We changed the way we define mature, I'm fine with that. The problem I have is we are advertising family friendly. You said it yourself, we are a mature gaming community, not once in your post did you mention the words family friendly.

And actually, no. A good portion of our kids don't do COPPA. I know from experience with recruiting. They chose not to. I also have a guide for parents to make there life easier with COPPA, and I updated the rules so they are up to date with what we have. I went and told my younger recruits about this rule, that didn't need COPPA, and they disagree with it because they came to our server because of the no swearing.

They all said they will have to adjust to the change, but the younger audience doesn't agree with the rule. They want a place where they can hang out and not have to worry about parents yelling at them for hearing the word **** over the mic.

Final post on the matter.

I'll throw in my feedback on the matter since I've brought this up in the past back in my day, It's about time we as eGO have matured to this new era, i support it. One thing that constantly bothered me was having to warn someone for just saying
"shit"
or the slip of the f-word, when it wasn't aimed at anyone. I always felt that something like this would only make us better and I'm glad that day has come. There was always an image that we were that community that you couldn't curse on and people had their comments and avoid us or judge us, at least that was my experience whenever I tried to get pubs to come play over here when I was with TF2 and reached out to the tf2 community on reddit for events or fills.

Our severs are still "family-friendly", to me this means providing a punk free, safe environment, if you would... to our members/visitors. You guys make it what you want it to be from here on, i'm a firm believer of the phrase "Just because you can you shouldn't", pubs will come and not have to worry about being warned for the smallest thing. I see this as an opportunity to focus on more severe admin issues like disrespect and hacking. Those two things are what we should be focused on, it's great to come play on servers where we have professional grade admins who want nothing more than to make sure we all have a fun place to play. I personally don't curse in my daily life, I will, like anyone when i'm beside myself, but not in everyday conversation, i wasn't raised like that.

look forward to seeing how this goes for us, i see good things ahead.

"No disrespect tolerated. This includes excessive swearing and the use of any racist, sexist or homophobic terms. This rule is for text chat and voice chat. Sprays, forum posts, avatars and signatures would need to be PG rated. This allows players to swear here and there, it does not allow players to speak like a sailor"

To be fair i would say just handle it like you would any Rated R room in TS..
