Being an admin in real life.

Today I was part of a Halo 3 party. I brought a considerable amount of equipment, and I had to oversee a particular game. This was a real party where everyone was playing face to face (not over live). I had the responsibility (like an admin) to make sure that everything was running smoothly. I'd like to share some of my experiences.

There were many young immature players there that cursed and used poor language. I wanted to tell them to stop, but I didn't want to appear mean especially since they paid money to play at this event. I was face to face with them and I couldn't tell them to stop even though they were being disrespectful of the people and the equipment.

My experience tonight greatly contrasted my admin experiences on the servers. It is much easier to tell people to not curse and to know that you can easily kick people that are doing wrong. I find myself to be a more successful admin on the servers than in real life.

It turns out that as a result, one of my 360 controllers was stolen.

My advice to anyone that has to admin in real life: stand up for yourself and be confident. Don't be worried to tell people to leave. I made some pretty bad mistakes. It is much easier to admin in the servers.

this is very true noravic...i never have the nerve to tell ppl at my school to stop either...it just doesnt seem right to be a "tattle tale" in real life

Admining in real life sucks. Because admin is short for administration. And administrating sucks. You have to deal with PEOPLE. Wow. Imba.

I am the Lead Editor (an admin position) on another website, but in addition to managing content quality and direction I have to solve petty disputes. Which is a waste of my time. I can easily sympathize with the super-strict rule-enforcing that goes on here (no offense) because it is a pain to have to deal with things over and over and over and over.

real life adminning is hard. You usually cant kick people unless theyre a constant problem. I work part time at a paintball field and i have to kick people our hourly for taking their masks off during a game, overshooting(like pointblank to the chest for like 30 seconds) and throwing their guns around.
It's really hard when theyre armed, Ive been shot quite a lot for being the law on the field. Only good thing is that if theyre really ticking me off and they take off their mask i get to tackle them and put their face into the ground to 'protect' them

You'll learn quick when you're thrown into the pit. For a couple years I had to deal with close friends and do some of the same things... It's hard to be the party pooper sometimes but someone has to do it and learning that can only lead you to success. Some people are born leaders though where as others are just meant to be loyal followers, so don't beat yourself up if you're not one to take charge, if it doesn't fly with you, find the characteristics about you that you can harness to help in another way.

Alright, I guess I win on this one.. Trying to be a store manager at a grocery store. Not only do I have to deal with the customers, but I have an entire stock crew of 17/18 yr olds who aren't quite that mature yet.. Try doing that.. It's not really a struggle, but you just keep to the rules and things go right. Family environments require a lot of discipline and a bunch of supervision.. If they don't want to listen, I give them the option of doing what I'm telling them to do or go home. 99.9% of the time they'll shut their yapper and go back to work. +1 me.

Uh...I thought I would just add my two cents here. When you are an admin in the servers, you are an admin in real life. Those servers are very expensive to upkeep and are somebody's property, and it is our job to maintain that property. You learned a valuable lesson, and I am glad to see that you gained something from your experience.

I worked a 200 person weekend LAN party in Kingsport, TN (16hr drive for a LAN party, Im such a nerd!)a few years ago that the gaming company I was working for organized.I had one player that was spouting profanity ingame so I went around making every single player show me their scoreboard until I found the one doing it. I stared him down and told him if he did it again he would be escorted out, didn't have any problems after that. Our policies then closely mirror eGO's, so it wasn't something we'd allow on our servers and we sure weren't going to allow it at an event we were hosting, whether they paid their $15 or not. They signed a registration form that stated our policies for the event and the possible consequences for deviating.

I managed a store full of 16 year olds. So ha!

But Herm helped manage a country full of people with weapons! I think he takes the cake.

I've had a drunken hobo scream threats at me because I wouldn't sell him beer. Most people back down when you give them the steely glare that says "You'd better [Expletive Deleted] back off or I'll [Expletive Deleted] call the Police" Kinda fun sometimes.

Military Service still beats me though.

@ TheBigHerm: All admining is admining in real life, but when I say "real life," I mean that you can see the faces and are actually physically nearby the people you are dealing with. It is different than admining in servers because you cannot permanently ban people from real life. Sorry Lafinass!

Sure you can! You'll probably just get 50 to life.. maybe the chair if you live in a DP state.

Seriously, though, I always avoided those situations like the plague. I don't see anything wrong with live tourneys and such, I'm just a very nonchalant player most of the time. I'm here to unwind, and I find that if people can actually see how unaffected I am by winning or losing (I'm having a good time just playing a game) they tend to think I'm "not into it". This isn't true, there are just things in life that I find to be more worthy of my emotional output.

Like the Big Herm said though, we're all admin-ing in real life 'round these parts.
