Recapping Our New Policy On Language

It’s been an interesting two weeks in EGO. The Community Management team made one of the largest changes in our community’s 10 year history. Gaming and society continues to evolve at a rapid pace. It was time for a modification to our Code of Conduct. The social norm of today is very different from that of 10 years ago. Many different things are accepted in our society than they were then. After long discussion we made the change to our first two rules in the code of conduct.

Effective immediately, we will adjust our focus of PUNK FREE GAMING towards targeting disrespect. Understanding that every individual communicates differently from another, we need to focus less on the little things people say and attack the larger more hurtful things. Our Code of Conduct will now read:

1. No disrespect tolerated. This includes excessive swearing and the use of any racist, sexist or homophobic term.
2. All names, sprays and avatar icons must be PG-13 rated.

Effective August 20, 2016 we began allowing swearing via any form of communication in EGO. The services included were server voice, server text, and forum text. Players can communicate how they want as long as they are not being disrespectful or completely excessive. Punks who target players or feel the need to use every flavor of swearing in their communication still are not welcome on our servers.

If you swear, it doesn’t make you a punk. A little swear here and there definitely does not make someone a bad person and we should continue to just let it go. A person becomes a punk once they start using every swear that comes to mind to express themselves. Those kinds of people we do not need here.

As we expected, this spurred a lot of discussion. Members voiced their opinions and casted their votes in regards to their feelings on this change. We want to thank everyone for their contributions towards the movement of this policy. Members with opinions on both sides of the policy were making their voice heard. Over the last two weeks it has been very evident how passionate our members are about this gaming community.

Final Thoughts

With the transition to a new policy not much has changed in our community. Our culture we have built over the past 10 years continues to provide a punk free environment for gamers to play. Our professional admins and leadership will continue to uphold the high standards we expect of our community. EGO will continue to be a place that any gamer can join and have a blast connecting with others at.

We also need to address the old rule which many have forgotten. No political discussions in our talk channels as well as on our gaming servers.

Our community shouldn't have any dealings with any sort of political views no matter what country our gamers are from. We are a gaming clan, not a political clan.

I've been in and out of eGO for a while so I never really understood this policy when it came around. I do think allowing *some* swearing is in the right direction, since it will kill the "Christian server" circlejerk I see every so often.

However, looking into Misterboy's post, I have to agree with him. That was the entire idea behind eGO having swear-free servers, was it not? To allow a fun gaming environment for the oodles of younger players who don't have to worry about every word in the Urban Dictionary being thrown at them for dying? I support eGO, but I don't support this new policy change.

While watching these threads, I can certainly see the points both sides are have, and there are some very valid points. Although the poll results were a "yes", we are not far from being very divided on this decision.

That being said, I think at this point forward we need to focus on training our admins on handling these situations, so that they have a very clear idea of how to react. Most of our servers have remained very clean, although I can see a few games where punks come around more often. I think we can continue to have a fun time and clean servers.

True. It's just...a 180 of a policy and a little flawed. "Excessive" can be subjective, while "no cursing" is objective.

I've had to warn in both DOD:S and the BF4 servers about this and it will only get worse. The election is in a mere 2 months and it is going to be rougher than usual.

If I understand it correctly, this is allowing anyone and everyone in our community to swear. However, if it's excessive or disrespectful, you'll be in trouble.

Remember that eGO members are always held to a higher standard of professionalism.

Yes this opens for all players members & non members to use mild language as long as it is not disrespectful or used excessively.

We DO allow some swearing. Damn, hell, ass, those are allowed. And yes, I do consider those swear words, if "mild" ones at that.

I've never seen this... "round pulling"... phenomena that you describe, but I'm a Christian myself, and that sounds dumb to me. =P

That myself is also how I'm interpreting this, not that if this is the case I plan on going full ham on cussing like a sailor in game or anything. I'll be the first to admit I slip up once in a while in game, but at least if this is the correct interpretation I won't feel like I may possibly be smitted down later for it lol. I'm indifferent to the change I suppose, tho being here for a few years now (3 I think? Maybe 2...idk) and being part of the non swearing policies, I'm more inclined to stick with the prior ruling versus the new one, but indifferent all the same.

I agree on the punk part some people in ego get really angry when someone swears and that really doesn't make them a punk. So it's great

We all see and read things different so how you read this is up to the individual admin, to me it doe's not say allow swearing per say, it say's allowing slip of the tongue swearing until it become excessive.
The other day a player typed "f***, f***, f***, f***,f***,f***.. That I understood to be excessive. What would you think?
I am lucky as the Avalanche players do not swear and complain if a new player swear's.
I am just a lucky son of a gun.

I'm kind of biting my tongue on my thoughts the whole thing. I joined... about 7 or 8 years ago now? This was the only place where I didn't have to deal with profanity for various reasons. This is just a total flip, it seems. I really didn't see it coming. I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of people having fun testing the limits now and the confusion now as to what's actionable and what's not, which I've witnessed myself. This was one of the few places younger people and others that wanted just a clean gaming experience could go to, and now that's being called into question.
