Now, lets all stop shooting our guns and think for a moment. Swearing in our servers is not allowed and can get you kicked or even banned. It even clearly states in the rules, NO SWEARING. I'm an =(e)= and for me, it's frustating that when someone harasses our servers and can't REALLY do anything about except request bans and contacting admins. ( like mah good friend, Captain Mental :p ) They'll eventually get caught, but it's just uncontrollable. Mic swearing is even HARDER to get rid of, because you can say whatever you want. Freedom of speech. You can offend someone and that could make them feel like " O, this server sucks. Going to another better server" It just makes =(eGO)= look bad. Not only just swearing, but other things like cheating or pretending to be an admin ( pretending to be an admin just makes me sick ) People say it's a M rated game and you should expect bad things to be done. Yoy shouldn't. It says M, Mature, act like it. Or get out. Thanks for reading this long post :p ( You can lock it if you want )

everyone always makes a big deal out of it. when you join the servers it clearly says all of the rules every time you join. If you want to break the rules your gone, it's that simple. That's why i play in ego servers only

btw why does it say =(m)=™ member in your sig XD

Among countries that honor a tradition of free speech, or have it enshrined in their charter documents (Such as the U.S. and most Western Democracies/Republics), there is a misunderstood concept, and that is that it applies everywhere, however you like. Free speech provides you protection from the government infringing on your rights to protest government action, publish media, and petition the government for redress of wrongs.

Free speech does not apply to private property, private servers, and private associations. As our highest form of punishment is removal from the community, not imprisonment, execution, etc., we can make and enforce rules for our society as we see fit. We are not a government. You have no free speech rights in our servers or forums. I'll link some more threads later, but never feel uncomfortable asking a player to clean up his or her act.

You got it right Monkeybits.

btw, being =(e)= I feel like someone else's job to tell people in server what to do, because the rules also state for us NOT to act as admins...cause we are not...hehe.

In over 10 years of online gaming this is the best clan I've ever seen...gj guys!

Also keep in mine that the people who come to our servers and break the rules and complain when told to stop are normally doing it to defend their ignorance of not looking at the MOTD. It doesn't take that long to read a few rules...

in all honesty I've never read the MOTD.... lol I just use common sense!
[/quote1208715942]

Ah man... but it's such a pretty MOTD.

^^ Monkey. This isn't America. This is eGO land. And in eGO land, the rules are both concrete and brutally enforced. Live with it :). Great post, though, because it brings up a hugely important point besides the goofy freedom of speech thing; the MOTD. I (almost) count that as a warning in and of itself. Just because most people choose to click past it doesn't mean that they should. My first warning is always something like "watch the language (namehere), if you have any questions about the rules, type MOTD". The MOTD has all of the basic rules you need to survive on an eGO server without getting the hammer. You don't read it, that's your problem. We've got too many great members and pubs to spend our time dealing with jerks.

There isn't a sticky, but here's the key paragraph from a post I did a while back:

[blockquote]Most people who try to invoke freedom of speech simply want to use profanity or to promote a cause. That brings us to how free speech applies to eGO. The answer is that it doesn’t. eGO is a private association and our servers are private property. Much like a store, we have the right to refuse service to anyone who disrupts the purpose of the place of business. If you stand up and start swearing your head off in a store or a church, you’ll be arrested for disturbing the peace. If you bring a box and stand up on it in the corner of a store and start talking up your favorite political candidate, they’re going to escort you out or have you arrested. The purpose of such establishments is to serve the greatest number of people possible, and to that end they do not permit anything that might drive off customers. A private association running a private gathering place has complete freedom to set its own rules and govern by those rules. Any visitor or member of the association may be disciplined according to the rules of that group, up to and including expulsion.[/blockquote]

Specifically on swearing, in eG forums I commented:

[blockquote]Don't you get tired of constant four letter words? It's just plain boring. I enjoy having real conversations with other players, and hearing creative and fun things in game. Can you get that without the no swearing rule? Sure, it happens, but if you go play other servers without the rule and compare them to ours, you'll find it's less common.

I've actually been in games where the extent of the conversation was just profanity when someone was about to die, something went wrong, etc. I prefer informational exchanges and humor, personally.

Sheer vehemence aside, profanity rarely expresses much. It's linguistic clutter that often actually interferes with real communication.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson who said, "Profanity is the effort of a weak mind to express itself forcefully." I know plenty of very intelligent people who swear, so I don't know that I agree entirely, but I do think it's lazy at the very least. With so many ways to express oneself, why not come up with something new, or if not new, unique?

Anybody who's heard me say, "Oh, flaming hamsters!" on mic has to admit, that's a lot more entertaining than an f bomb.[/blockquote]

Nobody is stoping you from cursing, they are just asking you to not subject other players to it. You can curse all you want, just don't key the mic.

[blockquote]"Oh, flaming hamsters!" [/blockquote] !lol That's a good one. I guess I need to be more creative.

Yeah it does make us look bad to all the public players.

You know what?

With all this talk on swearing I would like to throw in my two cents.

1. Its degrading and disgusting.
2. Its immature and per Monkey's last post on Thomas Jeffersons' quote, it shows a mind incapable of controlling itself and acting in a polite manner.
3. People cuss to a) draw attention to themselves b) express frustration c) annoy others.
4. Tolerating cussing shows conformation to political correctness and lack of substantial backbone to actually stand up for what is wrong. If its wrong here why should it be right in our lives?
5. A good way to stop cussing is to start at home. Walk yourself through your frustration and the reasoning behind why you used the language and I bet you you will find it rather insignificant.
6. I am not perfect and everybody here knows I let slip a "crap" or a "heck" in game or on a post.
7. Stopping cussing shows a mastery of ones tongue, the hardest skill in the world.

Thanks for reading.

you know, if you haven't played TF2 on another server recently, you might have forgotted how much profanity gets uttered out there; I mean, heaven help us if the engie doesn't get that teleporter up right away! :p anyways, it's nice to have a place for us (and our families) to play without the explicit comments - thanks =eGo= :D

Swearing, in my mind, is a form of speech that should be reserved for extreme situations, or as my dad always puts it, as "words of power". I swear like a sailor when I'm at school or talking with friends. There's little need to have powerful words at school because it's such an informal setting. However, at work, for example, it's unprofessional to say "Hey, ***********, what's ******** goin' on?" or something like that. In a professional situation it shouldn't be too hard to reserve those words for when actual hostility is needed (say, a customer pulls a gun on you or something. At that point manners go out the window.)

On video games, I typically do swear quite a bit, again because it's an informal setting. However, those people who curse after people tell them not to are really just refusing to listen to rules because they think they're better than them. They figure because every other server out there allows swearing, why should they stop on this server? I personally view swearing as something that helps me relieve tension, but at the same time, is it really that hard to just be polite? The reason I love swear-free servers online is because everything feels a lot more friendly. It's one of the reasons I've fallen in love with these servers in just about a week.

As for the "It makes us look bad" thing, I'd like to point out that the servers are quite full most of the time. If we lose a few malcontents who are unable to not swear, then good riddance, but it really doesn't at this point appear to be affecting the population yet.

I think swearing helps reduce tension in your body, specially when under intense stress. However, I don't wanna hear it and no one really want that anyways. During the last WTB championship, i sweared so hard I probably woke my neighbor's neighbors ^_^ BUT, i didn't do it on the mic. Instead, I canalyzed my rage in a respectful, reasonnable manner: The headshot.

Respect for people is essential and that's why it's fun to play against people who are creative about their unhappyness. My favorite is: You're window-shopping for a bullet in the head... Let me introduce you to my best seller.

WAY MORE POLITE!!! And funnier. And after that, no one's feeling's hurt. I like you guys, and I hate it when you kill me, but I don't want to create a tension with bad words, cause who knows, tomorrow, i may be on your team, and if you're a medic and I need health, i'm doomed ^_^

I agree with virtually everything said in this thread so far, so I'm not going to reiterate. I'd just like to add that I find it simultaneously frustrating and amusing when people try to argue in mid-game that they should be allowed to curse. Because even if you don't think it's disruptive to curse, surely you must understand that it is disruptive to cause a huge arguement in the middle of a game. Philosophy and debate are for scholarly environments, not for the battlefield. Sheesh!
