R.E.D is seeing red.

Ok here is something that happened to me during a game and only while I was engineer...

I would shoot and see red, then a group of expanding X's would fill the screen and fade away.

In this screenshot I backed away quickly to show you the expanding sphere of X's.

Anyone knows what this is?

I... have... NEVER seen anything like that! I would guess that you've got some rendering problems, perhaps with the particle system.

Have you gone through the usual diagnostics? Verify GCFs etc? Does this only occur in TF2, or are there similar wierd problems in other Source games? Added any new cvars recently?

I'm guessing your shotgun spread shot texture got corrupted somehow.

thats the new engineer upgrade...the sentries now shoot cages in level 4 around enemies and trap them until they shoot it enough then it breaks

Well, it at least does make some sense that it could be confined to just the engie's scattergun, as the game does consider each classes' a separate weapon. Very unusual, though. As suggested above, check all the files and whatnot, and maybe go so far as to delete and redownload the local content; I've had to do that a couple times for other games in the past.
