If you want to get promoted you need to become known to your division leadership. That is who will promote you. This has to be in a positive way. Be friendly, don't whine, be a team player. All of that sort of thing.
If you have access to a microphone, or better yet a headset, for your computer use it. Both in game, and in Team Speak 3. There is information about TS3 under Gaming with eGO on the left side of the forum entries. This is not an invitation to spam the mic. Be friendly, greet people when they join the server, and get back to playing the game.
Get eGs and eGOs on your friends list in Steam and in the forums. Most people, if you invite them to be friends, will say yes. These should be people you play with in game. It gives them a reason to remember you.
When you have time to play, play on EGO servers. Play the game(s) your division supports.
If you find you would rather be playing in another division most of the time, then change your division. The point is, spend time playing in the games where your leadership will see you. When you have a choice between a server that is nearly full and a server with fewer players, play on the server with fewer players. It helps fill the server and you will stand out more. Leadership likes it when people help fill the servers. It's a great way to show a good attitude. Just because you do not see leadership in the server does not mean they are not there. Their spies are everywhere. As Jubei points out below, eGs and eGOs will recommend worthy es and eGs for promotion.
The leadership looks for mature people to promote. Don't confuse maturity with age. Maturity is how you act.
Positive answers to the following are good: Do you act friendly? Are you polite? Do you put the teams need ahead of your score? Do people look forward to playing with you?
Positive answers to these are bad: Do you disrespect people? Do you complain? Is it all about you?
They also look to how often you post on the forums. When you post actually type something. Before you type think. Do not just post, "Yea me too" or "LOL".
Promotions happen when they happen. Usually there is a large promotion list around the December Holidays and another around EdgeGamers Birthday. Occasionally, if a muckety muck sees an EdgeGamer handling a sticky situation really well, they will be given a "battlefield" promotion on the spot. My own experience says that the time spent as an e is much longer than the time spent as an eG. There are fewer eGs to watch than es and they are under close scrutiny to make sure they are learning the ropes and exercising good judgement. Since es are asked to play and set a good example they are not usually on any ones radar. If they are on someones radar they are most likely misbehaving. Behave!
Never ask for a promotion. Weird but true.
Most important, have fun. Remember you got involved to do something fun. If you're not having a good time you will not get promoted.
