Im going off to college next year (2009) and its dawning upon me that I sorta need a laptop because all the cool kids are doing it and its easier to lug around a lappy to class than my desktop and its setup. Ive looked at cyberpower and ibuypower and they seem to have good laptops fairly cheap. My min specs are vista home premium 32bit 8600 512mb core 2 duo with 4-6 mb l2 cache 2 gigs of ddr2 ram and like a 160 gb 7200 rpm hard drive. if anyone has suggestions please throw them up.

P.S. dont say raffle im going to enter that soon lol 8)

These arent necessarily the Alienware or HyperSonic's of Laptops but for under $1500 for a gaming laptop is pretty hard to beat. Heres a link to the review of the [link=http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3273]P-6831FX[/link] which had a much lower CPU, but will give you an great look at the FX series of laptops. Oh and if you're not satisfied w/ the CPU's in the notebooks they are very very easily upgradeable. Also if you think eww Gateway, keep in mind they buy the OEM notebooks from a company called Clevo who makes the same laptops for WidowPC, Vigor, Velocity Micro, Sager, IBuyPower, and our own sponsor CyberPowerPC but a heck of a lot cheaper than any of those.

Asus has their C90 series that is fully upgradeable in every way. You can buy the C90S right now whitebox (barebone) and the C90P should be out sometime this summer. Both run on desktop core 2 duo processors and are. Ibuypower/Cyberpowerpc have the Xplorer X-5 series which are the C90S build. You can find a whitebox C90S online as well, it's just tough . The one's I have seen are generally $650 with nothing in them. I'll try to find a couple online stores and post them on here soon.

Hey flippy, I can cure that cough for you. I hear our friends at Cyberpower PC have some medication for it. All you have to do is have you or one of your friends spend within a $2,000 limit on a new gaming laptop and you are cough free!

LOL interesting...i recommend a AlienWare, Dell, or a Gateway...but that is just my opinion

wow thanks for the suggestions guys. i didnt know gateways did laptops like that. and as always cyberpower is pretty pro so ya. thanks again

i found a dell 17inch laptop online a few days ago with:
2.0ghz core 2 duo cpu
3gbs ram
nvidia 8700m 256mb graphx
250gb sata 5400rpm
dvd+rw/cd-rw combo drive

all this for around ~$1200
dont dis dell (i hate them too) but for what its worth theyre not too bad.
my friend has a inspiron 1100 from 6yrs ago and still works (except a dimm slot is dead [???]) and was upgraded to a 60gb 5400rpm ide drive and i think he'll upgrade it to 512 mb ram (runs xp plays ut2k4 with a 32mb vid chip 2ghz centrino cpu and 128mb ram (should be 256 but one dimm slot dead) on lowest or low settings at 640 x 480 not too bad)
so i must admit dells last long time from what ive seen

Hehe... the first thing I thought about when reading the thread title was that same Anandtech review (they seemed somewhat enthused, and Anandtech is about the only site I trust reviews from nowadays -- [H] can take those 'real-world benchmarks' and shove them... well, anyways).

I got to play around with a Toshiba gaming laptop a few months back, and was quite impressed (don't recall the model, but it was a beast, and they paid $2000 (MSRP) for it). It was extremely heavy duty, and very nicely laid out.

My gf has an Dell inspiron 17", built with gaming in mind, which made a decent substitution for little more than $1k. It's a bit 'cheap' feeling though.. a bit of flex in the plastic, and the lcd hinge isn't quite so tight.

My advice... specs are specs, so the discerning factor is build quality. If at all possible, go to a electronics store and feel them out.

Edit: Btw... are you looking for a 15.4" or 17" laptop? You'd have to go with a 17" if you expect it to be any type of 'desktop replacement', but it's not exactly easy lugging a big notebook like that around campus I'm sure, not to mention you'd be lucky to make it through a full day of classes without having to hunt down a power outlet.

Re-edit: Also, never pay for memory or hdd upgrades... you can pay the manufacturer $100 for an extra gig of ram, or buy 2x2gb yourself for around $60-80 (and sell the old sticks, if you want). Or, you can spend an extra $150 to turn that 80gb 5400rpm drive into a 120gb 7200rpm drive, or you can buy a 250gb 7200rpm drive on sale for around $110-125. Even upgrading from a combo drive to a dvdrw drive for 40bux -- you can buy you're own slim dvd burner for 40bux, and have the chance to pick it out yourself. Simply put, the only good upgrade is a free upgrade...
