New EVGA coffee heater installed

Added an EVGA coffee mug heater (9800gx2) to my computer. Coffee cups sitting on the top of my computer chassis are kept at a comfortable 42.5 C (108.5 F) when the computer is doing light duty coding. Warmer if I do any gaming. The interior of the chassis is doing reasonable approximation of an easy bake oven with the cover on.

Gah. Looks like I need to put some fans and some duct work in the computer. The previous setup did not need anything but the passive airflow in a 4U rack mount chassis, but I thought things were toastier than they should have been. Glad I pulled out a thermometer and actually measured things. Ambient room temperature is 25C... so the lid comes off for now.

Air (normal, not gaming) looks to be ~46C coming out of the card.

haha at least in the winter you wont have to worry about your heating bill
 
What did you upgrade from? Most cards past the 8800 run at 45-60 idle from what I've seen.

Shouldn't be pumping up your ambient that much though... =/
 
Yeah wow. I have an 8800gt SLI setup, and both cards idle @ 55. 65-70 max under load. Even then, the ambient temperature/case temperature is much less and never warm enough to heat something inside a ceramic mug.
 
I've a pair of 8800GTS in SLI, an ATI x1050, and a Creative X-Fi stacked one on top of eachother like legos and my ambient never gets beyond 5-7 degrees above room. The 8800GTS idle at 60 when the room is at 25, run at 80-85 under load and have been for a year now with no issue. Both are eVGA and I've come to accept the temperature as acceptable even though on my previous board it would have had me panicked.
 
I would say that it is just a tad bit too high...think about addin another fan
 
well atleast that cards good for something other than graphx lol
that runs hot, how many fans you got? I have 3 intake, 2 out and my system never gets above 70 on a full load (7900gt, 4600 amd64 x2, 4gbs ram) so poor or adequete(cant spell) ventilation may cause your system to run warm
 
You got it! You should have saved your money the EOl is July with something better coming out.
 
Does your case have adequate ventilation? I'm surprised your case is actually getting that hot. I'm using an Antec 900 case and it's very cool to the touch, even right next to the graphic card slot under load.
 
Got a couple 120mm fans on order. I'm going to need at least one case fan in the system or add a water block... Should show up some time this week. I was having the issue when I swapped out power supplies, which took out the only fan that was in the system.
 
If it makes you feel any better I dropped about 1k on evga hardware and am about to be back in the market for a new PC. I got the nforce 650I chipset mobo from evga, and 2 8800GTX cards in sli. I put all of this in a huge antec nine hundred gaming case. Both cards still overheat and the whole system becomes unstable if left on for more then about 8 hours. Short of going to liquid cooling there is not alot else I can do.

I had the 680i and currently have the 790i from eVGA with 2 eVGA 8800GTS in SLI with an ATI x1050 wedged between them and a Xonar D2X sitting flush against the top of the first 8800. My computer is all air cooling and my apartment hits 27-30C on a regular basis. My current up time is 9 days, 4 hours, 32 minutes. No offense mate, but you're doing something wrong if your system is unstable.
 
fans fans fans i got as many as mine will hold i got like 7 fans in mine 4 out 3 in if i didnt have all these mine would be like a toaster oven in there
 
The Antec 900 case has incredible cooling. If your gpu's are overheating is it possible that they are dust clogged? Have you tried turning the fan speed up in nvidia's control panel? You could also try an aftermarket hsf for the gpus.

What kind of gpu temps are you running? Are you sure that's the problem... w/ that kind of gpu power most people have psu issues.
 
yeah - like everyone said...get more fans ;-) your power supply fan should NEVER be your only system fan. You need AT LEAST one intake and two output fans in almost any gaming machine. the parts all run pretty hot and you have to have adequate airflow across everything. that's why most people who build their own machines go with larger cases - so that there is plenty of space to add fans and control airflow.

Ya, The PSU has been suspect for a while, it is a Cooler Masters Real Power Pro 750w. The problem I am having has to be PSU, GPU or Mobo related. I have already swaped out the mother board once, it stopped detecting my memory, and I have 4 gig of patriot DDR2 gaming memory that is SLI certified. This new mobo still does not always pickup the memory SLI settings. I turned the GPU fans up, However one issue I think could be causing the problem is the Power supply I have in there has a down blowing fan. And in my case the PSU is on the bottom so the fan blows agienst the bottom GPU. Only reason I have not changed the PSU out already is there is normaly only a difference of about 1-2 degreas between the GPU that does not have the PSU blowing on it.

So this case comes with 2 fans in front, 1 fan in back, And a gigantic fan on top of the case, so its not a fan issue. I was running vista 64bit for a while, but due to lockups and overall system unstability I went back to XP 32bit.

Not sure what else it could be, I have always built my computers for the last 10 years, and all of them accept the oldest run perfectly. My last box was an AMD 64bit box, and my son is using it daily about 3 feet infront of me running Vista 64bit and it never crashes. The only major thing I changed on this box is I went with eVGA instead of my normaly choice of ASUS. So I tend to think it is the eVGA parts as I have a cooler masters PSU in the other box, and it has never given me an ounce of trouble.
