Need laptop reccomendations

I'm need to buy my sister a laptop on a tight budget ($600). She is a graphics design major and need something to replace the ancient brick she has now.

It needs to be able to handle a reasonable workload and render projects at a reasonable speed. Towers are oit of the question for now

I would recommend the Microsoft surface if she would be fine with a tablet, the first 2 (or 3, I don't see anything about the third) generations have wacom technology and are good for drawing or modeling and such. I don't know much about the newer gens but they still seem to be good options for some artists. ASUS laptops are pretty nice, not sure on the cost though.
Sorry I can't be of more help for physical laptops, I mainly look into tablets that have wacom tech and support an OS.
