Melee tips and/or analysis?

Hey guys.

So I've been frustrated lately by melee attacks. Primarily because I suck at them, but also because they seem crazy.

For example, it seems every time I play at least once I will encounter an enemy medic, shoot at him, and have him turn around and melee me from what must be 30 feet. I'm talking half the length of the hallway in warpath, or easily farther than the range of the flamethrower.

Another example, I was again on warpath and we were doing melee only. I was a scout and was running around a heavy who was on the ramp on the final point. I was on the ground on the other side of the little wall pillar thing that is in front of / perpendicular to the ramp.

So he's above me, more or less behind two walls, and FAR away, and next thing I know I'm flying in the air and dead cause he got me with that big fist of his.

Lastly, in the same vein, I very often find myself sneaking up on my opponent, getting within a couple of feet, then swinging away with my melee and getting NO hits. Just woosh woosh woosh then my enemy turns and swats me like a fly.

Now, I DON'T suck at TF2. So that's not the explanation. I'm quite good at most aspects of the game (except I'm very aggressive so I get a lot of deaths >o| ) considering I've only been playing a month or two. It's just the melee thing I can't figure out.

So uhh, any info or tips would be awesome.

Thanks!

I have noticed similar... either bad physics or maybe lag?? Like I've gotten headshoted THRU the hall/tunnel in Warpatch from a sniper on the other side.. when I'm behind the cliff on the other side... and wierd other stuff like that... that would seem impossible... but it happens... so whatever. You probably score a few yourself but are unaware of them while the other guy screams foul. It's part of online gaming....

only real tip i can give you is to time your attacks. most melee weapons has a half sec delay before the hit. I always swing a little early i usually get the hit on 'em.

as for long range melee deaths, i wouild usually put the blame to lag. It always frustrates me when it happens.

Yeah, the long range melee deaths are because of lag. Either your own or your opponent's. Especially if you have a situation where you're swinging at someone's model and getting no hits.

The extremely long range melee (and other deaths), as where you will suddenly die and the death cam zooms in on someone on the other side of a wall? A TF2 glitch. Common one that occurs after alt-tabbing or when you have a lag spike, however brief. Only way to fix it is to restart TF2 or do what I do and play in windowed mode. The same glitch is also the leading cause of "hax" accusations, in my experience.

According to HLX, your average ping is about 54, so I can only assume any lag effects you're seeing aren't in the form of steady lag, but perhaps lag spikes. Do you run a firewall or torrent/file sharing program while playing, or does someone else in your house run a similar program while you play?

Naw just me and my comcast. And I close everything that is not essential (including every single thing accessing the internet) before playing TF2.

I've been playing CS since 2000 (? thereabouts ?) so I'm no n00b to online FPS, but TF2 has some crazy happenings for sure.

If it's just TF2 / The Internet's fault I guess I can live with that, and it's nice to hear some other people express the same frustrations. Next time I get bonesawed from 30 feet out I'll just imagine that the last person I bottled thought I was 30 feet away.

And thanks above for the 1/2 second idea. I'll give it a try.

for the sniper hits then you see them behind a wall its because of a common sniper tactic hide behind cover then sneak out get a shot run back before they scope again
but the medic bonesaw deaths=BONESAW>then everyone EVEN ME

all i can say is that i punched randomly with a heavy and killed 3 cloaked spies in a row. lol pure luck!!

i usually snipe and can vouch for this tactic... you shoot from long range, then will most likely vacate your spot for a quick second to recharge and stay hidden from the rest of the action. It will look like he is in a spot that can't hit you.

That sounds like lag to me, if as you say he's 30 feet away... Do you have the same problem on other servers?

Of course, you all know by know that the best weapon is the Wrench, as used by the Wrench Patrol.

Ok. Since this forum ask for tips I'll be the first to post one. :-) SO, one of the best tips is of course surprise. Try not to go head to head with anyone in melee. Always keep moving back, forth, circle strafe, and my fav. JUMPING. Jumping is my absolute fav tactic in melee especially as a spy. Some people dont realize you can back stab people from above them. Just look down as your over them and get them in the back of the head. Also, you can stand on an enemy's head. I have beaten down many a heavy with a bat due to this. So yea, just basically keep moving and swinging.

Lol. There goes my next 20 hours in-game trying to pull that one off!

Maybe you're getting hit so far away because of lagging hitboxes. This might explain why you still get headshotted just after you make it to cover, or why the Heavys minigun bullets seem to round corners to kill you. ( Even though I think it really shoots angry bees, not bullets...)

With any class, and the delay of the attack, along with the speed of the attack, means two things that are vital to recall, speed means you can cover more ground while the swing delay occurs (medic, scout, pyro are great examples of this) soldier, heavy, demo have a much slower speed compared to the rest (it is harder to melee, but the upside is you have the ability to take a crit hit, save the demo with some) Its true jumping can work wonders with some classes (its classic to get a leap into a pyro expecting you to have run and taking him down) Speed helps you far more in defensively avoiding melee swings in a duel (as the classes that can are usually one shotted on a crit) While with the slower classes, its a matter of timing to get that hit. (move forward left and forward right to help there, i cant really explain it that well, but only say that you move to where the guy/gal is going to be while swinging so they walk into the hit.)

I can only say that when its only melee and im a soldier I find standing in a corner and waiting effective, they leap towards me and I plant that shovel in thier face and run out and hit em again. And pray you get lots of crits... and aim! Im not too helpful but oh well!
