So, just recently, my PCI based NIC has been acting up. I'm on a regular 60mbps Charter connection but my desktop only speedtests at 8-20 megs no matter what time of day while on wifi. Here are the conditions:

-No downloads in background
-Windows Update is disabled (temporarily)
-No other programs on my PC running in background
-No other wireless devices on network

My phone speedtests at 60 and my laptop (WiFi) speed tests at 60 on the same network. My desktop speedtests at 60 when connected via ethernet. Here is what I have done as far as troubleshooting:

-Relocating the card to a different lane
-Reinstalling drivers
-Switching between 2.4/5Ghz bands

I do not have a different network to test my PC on at this time.

Nothing has worked.... Thankfully my new motherboard has dual-band AC wireless support but my new proc isn't here yet. My temporary solution is running cat 5 all the way to my PC, but I really would like to hear your thoughts on what could be wrong with the NIC. I've pretty much used every troubleshooting technique I've learned in my short few years of network administration and have come up dry. The NIC is an ASUS PCE N15.

How old is your card and what model is it?

Only things I can think of is your walls are made of lead.

If you have some beast of a GPU maybe that's causing some interference?

Your using 802.11n when your router only uses 802.11b or something like that (doubt that though)

Your PC is speaking to you the only way it can to run a cat 5 and feed it the internetz that it wants.

Did you try jiggiling the ip?

Thing is, it worked for maybe two weeks just fine until a little while ago. I did virus scans and nothing has come up. Normally I wouldn't complain but I can't launch any game without my entire connection dropping. It's like as soon as one task starts sending/receiving packets, everything else in the background drops (i.e. in TS, and I start a youtube video, my connection to TS drops. When youtube is done buffering, ts reconnects automatically).

It's odd. I have a permanent cable running to the tower now. Installed a switch and ran cable to my printer and my desktop.

Try adjusting the wireless c hannel to see if that helps

I'm gonna fix this problem with your entire network...

First of all: I need your modem model, your router model, and your switch model...
Second of all: CAT 5 is shit, get CAT 6E, the 6 is faster than the 5, more data can be crammed down that pipe, and the (E) part of the 6E is for long distance.
Third of all: Your Computer's Network Adapter is faster than your NIC, the only NIC's you should have on a computer are ones that do FTTH compatiblity (Fiber) Nic. The only reason to do a NIC card on top of your built in Network adapter is to do server connections(storage server in home, FTP, ETC)
Fourth of all: Follow "STEP 9, 10, and 11 " In my GUIDE, This OPTIMIZES your networking.
Fifth of all: Are channels congested in your area, you can check if you have an android with THIS APP. if it overlaps with other wifi spots, don't use that channel.
6th of all: is your router overclocked: YOU CAN, with custom firmware

NOTE: THIS REQUIRES DOWNLOADING FIRMWARE, IF SOME FIRMWARE FAILS HALFWAY DUE TO POWER OUTAGE or a DC, It could BRICK your modem, to undo the damages, Get your FIRMWARE from your router: it will help with restoration.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you get a AC ROUTER vs a B/G/N connection, SPEEDS ARE BLOODY FAST. and the range though


If you have a modem that your ISP gave you, GET RID OF IT, same goes for Routers as well. They are not fast and there's better ones out there.
