What is the policy on this?

For example on warpath there are plenty of places where a demo man can sticky jump and lodge himself in a horizontal corner between the ceiling of the map and the cliffs.

I'm inclined to say this is cheap/exploit because it is using an artifact of a map in a way that wasn't intended, but I'm not sure how strongly I believe that.

What are people's opinions, and is there a set policy about this?

I know by right by the second spawn point (closest to the final/main one) there is a stone arch where a demoman can sticky his way up to a ledge. I do not consider this an exploit for several reasons:

-He is not really "outside" the map.
-He cannot shoot anything over the arch.
-He can place stickies on the ground below but they are often blown away by enemies.
-He cannot effectively shoot grenades underneath him and get to any of the enemies on the other side.
-If a soldier or other demoman makes it past the arch, the demoman cannot stay up there without dying pretty quickly.

I've tried doing that before, but I've found it's a pretty lousy place to be. You can't really do anything but lay a wall of stickies which get blown away anyway. Just my 98-cents-short-of-a-dollar.

I highly doubt there is a policy about this also the only reason how they can get up there is because they get wedged in and I wouldn't count that as an exploit, its like when engineers build a sentry on the roof of the capture point

If you can see it and kill it, it's perfectly fine. Shooting through walls that are blocking it's vision is a different story.

My rule of thumb on exploits is this:

If you are able to get into a spot where you can kill people, but not be killed yourself, or are simply in an area outside of the map in which nobody can attack you for the sole purpose of wasting time, you are exploiting. Anything else I wouldn't consider exploiting, unless it is a class exploit, such as if you found a way to somehow fire the heavy weapons gun while moving at normal speed instead of walking slowly.

If a demoman or soldier can find a nifty spot to sit that can get them a creative kill or two, more power to 'em. But in most cases, such as that spot in warpath, it leads to them getting shot down pretty easily if they stay there for very long.

I'm sure that the demoman class had to be designed with this concept in mind. There are places in Valve's own maps (like 2fort) where I've seen a demoman launch to a normally inaccessible place and lob explosives. I don't see this as a problem; this is a skill that is related to the extremely versatile demoman class. However, if there is a glitch in the map where a demoman can unfairly be protected from enemy fire, then he is obviously exploiting.

You're talking about this spot, right?

The demo that's up there is not invulnerable at all, so it's not really an exploit.

Yup yup he was.
Its not that hard to kill him either.

I always see demos up there on warpath, i just let em be, they will die soon enough =/

As long as the individual is not 'floating' in mid air or outside of the bounds of the map, this is allowable.

And relatively stupid IMO. Sacrifice all your mobility for a slight advantage in surprise? No thanks.

I see it the same way as a demo in the rafters of the first point of dustbowl. Not an exploit, just annoying.

As Lafin stated...as long as the player doesnt seem to be floating in the air. If you spec the player and they dont look to be standing on a ledge of some sort than that is an area that most likely wasnt meant for them to be. That also goes for standing under them and looking up, if you look up at them and they appear to be floating they need to get down. This was a ruling by the council and advisors quite a while ago and should still be upheld.

I think it's an exploit only if they can hit you and you can't hit them back o they're just wasting everyone's time. Otherwise, I consider it fair game - some rockets dislodges them easily.

The game designers at Valve actually have said that the demoman's sticky jump and the soldier's rocket jump are a deliberate trading of health for height. The caveats have been mentioned: No air walking, no outside the map. So, in this case there was no problem.
