I have a serious problem: The patch isn't installing for me! Does anyone have any solutions? I'm desperate for help at this point.

So I booted up TF2 and as I've come to expect from my comp I waited several hours for the patch to finish installing. I had to leave it overnight, and when I woke up, Steam encountered some sort of error. I tried booting up TF2 again, and let the patch install once again. It's now frozen- the progress bar and time left hasn't moved for at least 3 hours.

wow - several hours? are you on a dial-up or satellite connecting?
as much as it may be annoying, my suggestion would be to have steam remove all of your local TF2 files, then re-download and install the game. sounds like one of the files glitched during the download process.

seriously, if its taking that long, something is wrong. even on dial up i could have gotten that update overnight.
if you dont wish to redownload everything, a possible solution would be to use steams tool to check your files. if that doesnt work, try backing up your game, then deleteing the original files, then restoring the game.
also, post your system specs. it might be your PC or what else you do with it at the time. if your doing other things while its updating, that could fragment the files. or say if your computer has half a gig of ram or something like that, thats a horrible bottleneck just waiting for you to run 2 things at once so it can screw stuff up.

I run TF2 on a laptop (usng a handy stylus as a mouse). Just felt I had to clear that up. And no I'm not on dial up, my connection is relatively fast. I started it about an hour before I hit the hay, so it must've botched up as I was snoozing. The thing is, I closed my laptop (therefore entering standby mode) by accident before bed and when I reopened it Steam screwed up. I think I forgot to mention this the first time around and for that I apologise.
I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling TF2, thanks for your patience and time everybody. I'll post back when it finishes, and if it still doesn't work I'll be sure to come back to whine and complain some more. -_-

Good news: The patch problem solved itself... while the update window malfunctioned, the game continued to update in secret after my third crack at the patch.
I owe you all a huge apology for my verbal diarghea in this thread. I should of guessed this problem would solve itself. Thanks KHeavy, trykael and Smash2K for having the patience of saints.
