Poor positioning is NOT baiting (and other common misconceptions)

As the title says: Poor positioning is NOT baiting. Simply put, just because a CT is bad, doesn't mean he's breaking rules. We aren't here to revoke or yell at CTs for not being that good, not everyone is good at video games, but everyone that likes playing them can still try to have fun.

Baiting is simply defined as: Purposefully putting yourself in harms way as a CT with the intent to kill the Ts when they chase you.

tl;dr Bad CTs are not always rule-breaking CTs.

Similarly, a CT positioning himself in a way so that the Ts can be moved safely (read: without getting a gun or running off) is not camping just because they can't see the Ts. If a warden intends to move the Ts through an area, CTs are more than welcome to sit in side areas along the route to prevent the Ts from running off. Examples, 1) CT in the bathroom in the hallway of alcatraz when the Ts are being moved from cell-block to the maze. 2) CT inside climb as the Ts are being moved to laser game on umbrella.

Basically, use common sense. It's easy to tell the difference between a CT that's breaking the rules and a CT who just isn't "good" at the game.

Nothing worse than immediately losing the round because some ct decided to stand in front of the Ts and die as the Ts were being moved, except now its apparently not breaking the rules because "it's okay, he's just bad."

There's a difference between people intentionally allowing themselves to get killed to give the Ts a gun or for whatever other reason, and those that are just bad. Purposeful bad positioning to allow the Ts a free CT kill or allows them access to a gun after the death of that CT should, in my opinion, be handled by an admin the same way as any other form of grief-ing as a CT. It's pretty easy to tell with common sense who is trying to break rules or get around things, and those that are just new to the game, or occasionally make mistakes, or are just bad at video games in general.

tl;dr: Admin people that are obviously "throwing" or "grief-ing" as a CT, but show leniency against those that are trying to follow the rules but just aren't "good" at the game.

The only difference is intent; the end result for everyone else on server is the same.

Ill be honest. I dont play Jail as that much. I am a bad CT. I dont position myself very well sometimes. It happens. Not everyone is an expert at jail. A simple warning or a "Hey, Go there instead of going here or go to that corner over there" would be good. Help instruct the CT's that aren't doing so good. Teach them...dont yell or put em down. Mistakes happen..its a game..it will be ok. I promise there will be another round.

its a game..

If a CT causes the round to fail because he got his ass killed in a situation like that, I will WRKB always. It is not ok to be CT if you can't follow up.

If the map provides adequate CT areas like catwalks and fenced areas ( cough: alcatraz, grand marble, stoneridge, openfield, even umbrella and blops) and the CT fails to use them to their advantage and instead jumps down to the same level so the Ts follow them instead of using their minimap to tell them to go somewhere then really they are baiting because it will cause the the Ts to believe they can kill that warden or another CT.

If the map lacks CT areas and they have to be on the same level then the CTs should be a great distance away as they have guns which work over vast distances even if the CTs are silver 2s and cant aim worth a damn.

The point of this thread wasn't really to "redefine" what baiting is. I'm just trying to have people understand that they need to use common sense. There's a difference between accidental freekilling and intentional freekilling. Same with baiting. Same with RDM on TTT. The intent is one of the most important parts to recognize.

I feel as though the intent (how coincidental) of this thread was a bit misconstrued by a few. Of course everyone is making very valid points on the the way CTs should/shouldn't be playing. I believe what Nick! was trying to say is maybe don't yell and put down a CT who could possibly just not know what is going on for a multitude of reasons (not knowing the map, something irl distracted him/her, being new to Jail, etc.), but possibly talk to them and say something along the lines of "Hey *insert player's name*, try not to bait the Ts that hard. Next time you should be *insert CT area position where he/she cannot bait the Ts. If you want any tips/tricks to being a CT, type !rules to see how Jail works or add me on Steam and I'd be happy to help!"

Every single person in this thread and many people who haven't posted in this thread have fallen victim to horribly baiting the Ts at one point or another (possibly even multiple times). I am of course no exception and am glad Nick! decided to post something of this nature.

TL;DR: Don't victimize a player just because he/she baited the Ts. Maybe help them get to know the map/position before you go out calling them a "shit guard" or a "terrible player".

If they continue to ruin the round by standing too close to the Ts even after we give them advice should they still be warned?

If they are obviously continuing to bait/freedamage/freekill/etc, then yes take administrative action. Just gotta use common sense and situational awareness on things such as this.

I feel like the amount of times this actually happens is being blown way out of proportion at this point.

As for this, I always prefer not to use the definition "baiting" as some people won't know what baiting is or will have a different definition of baiting. I don't see why an admin warning can't just be used when someone baits anyway. Theres literally no difference except one will be in green and anonymous.

Aye, at first I thought it was meant to redefine the rule, but thought wrong.

Thought I posted something like this earlier, though doesn't look like it actually got posted, but definitely agree with this!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel as though that type of behavior would borderline disrespect, though perhaps not necessarily warnable unless another disrespectful word was said with it?

It happens much more than you think.

Because some people react differently to admin warnings. Some would rather challenge authority or feel threatened by it rather than a player offering assistance personally. Anonymous posts don't always lead to the best solutions.

Yes if the player is actually calling someone "shit" and a "horrible player", that is disrespect. Most of the time people do something along those lines not specifically saying that. If someone is being patronized for their lack of knowledge on the Guard side, maybe giving them an admin warning isn't the best solution. Sometimes not using your power and just using your human communication skills could be the best solution.
