Thinking about buying a server

So I'm thinking about buying a server, 10 person and making it the achievementbox_b3. Basically a cube map with insta-spawn. Now this map would be for me and my friends, would be open to any eGO members that wished to join. It would be an all speak server with nothing but the best cooperation. Same rules apply with language and friendliness on our wonderful eGO servers. EXCEPT FOR THAT FACT THAT THIS IS MY VENTURE AND HAS NO TIES TO EGO, except for me wanting to help the eGO community out.

My main reason for this is to get all the grinding out of our servers (atleast for e's, eg's and ego's). For those that just want the achievements and going back to playing normally on the servers. These achievements have ruined the game imo, atleast when you have 7 medics on the team tryin to get the ridiculous achievements done, instead of going for the cap, flag, etc.

Again this would be my personal venture, if this is a problem or goes against ego rules, please just lock the thread. Otherwise I am going to do this to help everyone out and keep the unnecessary gameplay off our awesome servers.

I dont know, since I find when people gather with their friends to get the achivments, if fine with me. Get the achivments just dont quit playing medic after you get them, since we need medics on the servers.
I am up for the idea, would join it to do the events.

BTW just a suggestion, is to make a server maybe melee for part of the time since never played all melee servers but sounds like a ton of fun.

Basically, I would like to come up with some sort of schedule. Get 10 players in, have them work on the achievements, give them an hour and then get a new set of players in for the next hour. Really all you need to do is get the hard ones, the rest can be done in game. Thats my goal, I just wanted to see if its a good idea/alright with the council.

I have my dragonhill server you could use if you want. I have it as a 32 player 100 tick for testing purposes. If this is not violating EGO policy i'll load up what ever map you want and you guys can jump in.

no sv_cheats 1 allowed nor server passwords given out.

Just don't go buying a 'gameserver' hosting plan -- they are a ripoff (your paying for the 'game' more than the 'server'). For a small server, you can get a VS for probably around 15 bux a month, which would have plenty enough power/bandwidth to support 10 players. Also, as long as you have a decent enough upspeed on your personal connection (512k+), it'd be easy enough just to set it up on your personal pc or an old box on your network, thus eliminating cost altogether. If it's just for achievements, you wouldn't even have any need to run a RPC client such as hlx, so even an old 1ghz/512mb box could handle it perfectly fine.

As for setting up my own server using my comp, which is completely capable, or another computer. I have tried figuring it out with a bunch of other eGO members... and we can't get it to work. I suck at computers, not computer illiterate, just not of IT knowledge. Also one of the guys I've been talkin to a lot about this is an IT guy and tried to set up an old comp he had. Didn't work.

PS- the server is one dollar per person. So a 10 person server would only cost me 10 bucks for one month. And I only plan to have it for one month, by then almost everyone should have the achievements.

Sounds interesting. As long as you (the people trying to get the achievements) aren't hacking for them and you just need to get the hard (and stupid) ones outta the way (10000 heal points in a single life...ridiculous), then its sounds good. Maybe then, we can get back to being a clan not a mega achievement box server.

Problems running the dedserver? Does it just crash, or not connect? Double check to make sure you set up port forwarding for the proper ports to your local ip properly -- that's usually the #1 mistake...

But then again, why worry about medic achievements..? After the first twelve, all you get is a critz gun that'll only get you killed, and a useless saw that does no damage. And this is coming from a 'career' medic...
