Dark coffee. IMO it balances well with all the crap I add to it (1.5 - 2 spoons of sugar, a splash of half & half, and a couple ounces of genuine dark chocolate sauce and stir) due to the taste
Also light roasts typically pack more of a caffeinated punch in my case. But I'm also a coffee nut (hue) and buy whole bean dark roasts to grind them nice and coarse and put them through a French press. Those press pots may not seem like a big deal but they do indeed make a meaner brew than a coffee machine, especially if you go through the trouble of boiling water (get the good stuff. Distilled is pretty good and cheap -- tap water is good because of all the good minerals it doesn't filter out that, perhaps surprisingly, do make a difference in taste. DON'T buy into that hipster crap like 'reverse osmosis' -- mineral-free -- 'water') in the kettle and pouring piping hot, boiling water through a filter holder housing a paper filter full of those grounds.
It sounds like a lot of work. If you're like me and you're an antisocial, people-eating were-bear in the morning until you get your first sip of your daily cuppa Joe, you may just want something simpler, because it is a lot of work when you've got a case of the Mondays. But that said, it's great to indulge in when you can... wake up to a manly cup of coffee like that and throw some girly sh[BLEEP] in there to make a mocha so badass that it would make your local Starbucks barista rethink their life if they knew you were making this cup of momentary heaven at home -- and nothing can ruin your day at that point.
Except maybe a ninja coming out of nowhere just to kick you in the balls. Maybe.
