EA is focusing on revenue, and key is the "buy-play-upgrade" cycle occurring at a faster and faster rate. EA just sent a more cordial form of a cease and desist letter to the fans so dedicated to keeping our old favorites working. Bad Company 2, Battlefield 2142, and although not mentioned in the article, i'm sure soon on the chopping block will be Battlefield 4.

Check out this article just published on what EA is doing.

Dear [REDACTED],

I write on behalf of Electronic Arts Inc. and its development studio DICE or, in other words, ‘those guys that make Battlefield’.

We’ve noticed that Revive Network has several projects and websites devoted to being a Medic by reviving older Battlefield games, including Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield 2, and Battlefield 2142. It’s great to see your enthusiasm for these titles. Not to brag, but we too get the nostalgia chills when booting up these classic entries in the Battlefield franchise.

We need a favor though: we must ask that you stop throwing down Ammo Crates. In other, more legal-styled terms, please stop distributing copies of our game clients and using our trademarks, logos, and artwork on your sites. Thing is, your websites may easily mislead visitors to believe that you are associated or affiliated with EA and we’re the only ones that get to wear the Official EA dog tag. Since you’re Battlefield community members, we know that you are smart and helpful, and will respect that we must protect our intellectual property rights in the franchise.

Please drop us a line to let us know you’re on board with this. Should you have any questions regarding all this, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail at [REDACTED]@ea.com.

Thanks,

[REDACTED]

Maybe put a game out that people actually want and we will upgrade. BF1 is playable, but overall a disappointment.

Agreed, BF4 held my interest for thousands of hours but BF1 couldn't hold if for two hours. That's the amount of time I played it before I uninstalled.

I don't see BC2 or BF4 going down since the issue here isnt the servers but distribution of a product they do not own. You still have to buy BF4 or BC2 to play these games. I personally downloaded BF2 Revive but I can see where EA is coming from. Don't get me wrong I still think EA are really greedy people but maybe revive should have cleared the distribution of the old games with EA.

Are you sure they aren't making sure the titles are only sold by Origin, or sold in a way that ensures EA is paid?

Pretty sure this is the reason...but it would help if they still had the older games on Origin to begin with!

I just checked origin and it looks like they only sell BF1, BF4, and BF Hardline. I think the other titles (BC2, 2142, etc....) have reached end of life so they aren't selling or supporting them anymore.

Big issue would be that those games also ran on Gamespy, so it sort of makes sense they dropped it, since most people are coming for the multiplayer.

I'm not sure this is all legit.
Business wise asking people not to get all your products is inappropriate.
I can understand they no longer support some games, but not offering them for purchase? I don't know.

Wow, didn't know this was going on. I have all the boxed BF games and I still play BF1. And there are still a ton of people still playing BF1. I'm talking about the very first BF not the new BF1 game. The very, very first like 10+ years ago.

Welp, if this is true, I'll never purchase another EA game again. BF Revive is the reason I'm still able to play 2 of my most favorite BF titles ever created.. (BF2 / BF2142)

This was easily the best "cease and desist" letter ever written.

But I think you miss the point of you think the target (Revive) was chosen because they are merely "supporting" a game. Revive was also distributing without attribution. That was the issue.

Hey they can Kiss My Ash, i like those older BF Games, gee this is what happens when you get too big for your britches..EA Dice, remember this is how you got here today, by the older players like myself who put you in the very status you hold today.. I had mentioned that i was going to install BF 2 Dalian Plant we had so much fun playing, for shitz and giggles i thought what the heck why not ?

Don't know what all the fuss is about BF2? Never played that game...lol
I love and play BFBC2. I tried BF3, BF4, and BF1...didn't like any of them. BF1 was the worst.
I paid for BFBC2 and I will play it till my hard drive wears out, then I will load it onto a new hard drive.
I think the physics engine used is what will keep this game unique.

I also drive a 1981 small block Corvette.
And I have never received a letter from Chevy asking me to give up my "old" corvette for a new one because Chevy is worried about their continued revenue stream.

That letter is all about telling Revive to stop acting like they are affiliated with EA by distributing titles of EA games and using the EA brand on their websites as if Revive was affiliated with EA.
If Revive is "legally" distributing the games, then all EA can do is find a way to shut down Revive's purchasing and distribution channels. The letter sounds like Revive is not legally able to re-distribute those titles...for whatever reasons only EA would know.
The artwork, Logos, and other EA branding is definitely a No No, if EA tells you to stop.

I am not worried about EA not wanting to "revive" these older titles. Except for making it harder for new players to get in on BFBC2 in the future.

EA is nothing but a greedy worthless company now, been that way for the past x years, I'll never buy another game from them again, not after the whole bs ordeal that went down on twitter with them. They can care less about the players/communities, everything. F them.

I have BC2 on this laptop....it barely plays it but it will enough....I just keep forgetting to buy a USB mouse for this thing......

I'm gonna check out this Revive thing for BF2 tho....cause BF2 in my opinion is still the greatest rendition of the franchise. Before they went and destroyed the flight mechanics and physics in the BF titles.

SU-30 here I come.....Daddy misses you <3

Annnnnnnnnd it's dead :(

From the Revive site. Posted on every page:
"Hello everyone,

We will get right to the point: Electronic Arts Inc.' legal team has contacted us and nicely asked us to stop distributing and using their intellectual property. As diehard fans of the franchise, we will respect these stipulations.

Over the past 3 and a half years, Revive Network has filled a void in nearly 1 million players' hearts by bringing favorite titles back to life after online services were closed after the GameSpy shutdown. Only a few months ago, we took on the task of bringing multiplayer services online for a fan-favorite, Battlefield Heroes. The public reception for our efforts on this title were massive, and we never expected it to become as big as it was.

At this time, file downloads will be disabled.

This is probably the part where we have to say good bye. Before we leave the battlefield, we would like to thank all of the developers, artists, moderators, and last but not least every single player that helped make all of this a reality. Without you, it would not have become such a great time.

Signing off,
- The Revive Network Team"
