(after re-reading, that's a long post, so if you just wanna know how to kill one class in perticular, go down, there they are)

Sniper is my favourite class!
125 hours and more adding up.
Most points:69 (as Sniper)
Most kills:43 (as Sniper)
Most damage:7,102 (as Sniper)
Most headshots:25 (as Sniper)
and my pride
Most dominations:8 (as Sniper)

So now we know I ain't half bad a sniper, so here's a guide for all of you fellas who want to go, but feel it's too hard to play.

1) A good sniper needs a lot of patience. You can shoot when not fully charged, but the damages are not useful. A not fully charged shot, even to the head, is rarely a kill, and people have the time to find cover and health before coming back in your line of sight.
2) If you don’t have the time to fully charge, shoot anyway and aim for the head for crit. It can kill snipers, scouts, spies and engineers anyways.
3) Don’t be afraid to miss a shot. Even if you are not sure to get the headshot, a missed shot with small chances of doing a good shot is better than no shot at all. Beginner snipers will not be able to shoot all 25 rounds before getting killed, so don’t hesitate to use them.
4) Go get health. If you are injured, the next shot may be the killing one. It takes two un-charged sniper shots to kill you if they are no headshots, but only if you are fully healed. If you are damaged a little bit, any sniper shot will be fatal.
5) Do not be afraid to stand (in distance) in the shooting sight of every class except other snipers. Often, you’ll get shot at to try and disturb your shooting. Heavies will fire at you from miles away. If you are far, you have the advantage. Wait for the shot to align to the enemy’s head and kill him. Rockets won’t kill you, except critical ones, and you can avoid them by strafing left or right while being zoomed.
6) Know your environment. If possible, be back to a wall and protected by a ledge. If you are not back to a wall and can’t walk backwards, a spy may be trying to kill you. Don’t hesitate to take cover behind an object and to strafe right or left to shoot, and then come back behind it.
7) Worry about your red/blue dot. The enemy can see it. If they see it, they can guess where you are and take you by surprise or even jump/crouch out of the range of your gun, so you’ll miss the next shot. Hide it! Snipers are long-distance spies, do not forget that.
8) Keep your favourite secondary weapon ready at all times, either to kill spies or to un-zoom quickly. My favourite strategy is to shoot, then while I reload, to jump away, and then automatically return to a zoomed stance.
9) Don’t be afraid to back up. If any class charges you and you do not feel you are going to win the duel, run back to your nearest sentry and zoom from there. There is no shame in helping your team from way behind. There is in being 20 seconds in the spawn point.
10) Enemies that know your position will strafe left or right to evade your zoomed shots. Don’t try to follow the head! Aim at a place his head’s been two or three times AND is going to go back, then wait for an easy headshot. The right/left movement if easy to predict, and easy to beat when you get the idea.
11) Don’t follow the majority of your team. More often than I’d like to admit it, I will shoot one of my friends instead of the enemy. No one will die, I can assure you, but if it was a sniper duel, you’re dead. The more of your friends in the area, the harder it is for you to shoot an enemy.
12) Always move. That way, you can dodge backstabs, rockets and even other snipers. Strafe left and right all the time so you are never at the same place. That advice is going to save your life more often than you’d think.
13) Don’t be afraid to melee people. Your machete is one of the strongest melee weapon, so use it!

How to kill every other class and dominate them

Scout : He’s evil. He’s fast, he’ll dodge your sniper shots and bat you before you have the time to realise he’s there. The first thing you need to know about these guys is this one: DON’T AIM FOR THE HEAD! A fully charged shot will one shot him even if it’s in the foot (I strongly suggest you aim for the chest). The head is small and hard to get. Any headshot will kill him, but really, you have to be great to do it, because most scouts will be able to dodge you headshots. If he gets to you, try to shoot one zoomed shot at him, then change to your favourite secondary weapon and finish him with it. His weakness: he’s weak!

Soldier : He’s going to crit rocket your world. How to counter his rockets: they are slow. You are slow too, but you only need to walk three feet on your right/left to completely dodge the rocket. Aim for the head and wait for a fully charged headshot to finish him. Don’t be afraid of him: one rocket always hurt, but not more than one headshot. He’s slow, so take your time and don’t miss him.

Pyro : He’s going to prevent you to zoom properly if he gets to you. The secret: Don’t let him get to you. Most pyros will run strafing left and right with their flamethrower ready. Headshot him! If your first shot didn’t touch him and he’s getting close, shoot a second time, but aim the body. Then get your machine gun and kill him at a distance. If the flames don’t get to you, he’s dead. Even if you are on fire, back up while firing him. Better to kill him before the flames kill you. Often, I’ll bring the pyro in death with me, killing him with 2hp and dying from the flames. Tell yourself your team didn’t have to deal with him, and that’s an accomplishment.

Demoman : As some of you may already know, I have a little hatred for these pesky spammers. Act with them like you’d do with a fast soldier. The only thing you have to worry is when you’re in a position easily spammed by demomans you won’t even see. If so, back up and find a better place to kill them. Your sniper can displace stickies, but you better use your machine gun to do it.

Heavy : He’s going to be the easiest kill of them all. Their head is big; they move slowly; they think they are invincible. Let me assure you of one thing: they’re not. With a fully charged headshot, you’ll one shot a heavy even if he’s healed by 10 medics at the same time. If he’s übercharged, aim for the head and wait for the über to come off, and as soon as possible (but not TOO soon), bring him down. At close range, however, I’d suggest to run. However, you can try to melee him by turning around him faster than he turns his minigun at you.

Engineer : He’s going to build your doom. Normal engies build a dispenser near their sentry so they keep a decent amount of metal to repair it. I’ve got good news for you: you can one-shot those dispensers! AWESOME! Take off the dispenser with a fully charged shot and shoot as fast as possible the sentry with the lowest charge of the sniper shots. That way, the engie will not have the time to go back and get metal, but will stay there to repair his sentry until he has no more metal and you win that duel. Normal engies will stay behind their sentry to repair it, but you’ll often be able to get the far edge of his head. Headshot him, and then destroy the sentry. Two fully charged shot will normally destroy a level 3 sentry, but you only need one for the level 1. So if you see a level 1 sentry, destroy it BEFORE attacking the engie. So you can one-shot the level 1 sentries, the dispensers and every teleporters you find. You can even attack a sentry up front if you are further than its reach. Finally, if a sentry is around a corner and you can’t attack from far away, slowly move until you can see a leg of the sentry. Attack it! The sentry won’t see you and you’ll damage it. If the engie shows up, kill him with any fully charged shot. (but the head gives more points ^_^)

Medic : At long range, he’s no threat. However, you’ll find his head awkwardly small and hard to get. It’s not impossible, but it IS hard. Instead, try a fully charge shot at his chest and hope that he wasn’t fully healed. Normally, except if he isn’t moving at all, I will not be afraid to attack the person he heals instead of him. Let the rest of your team take care of him. However, you’ll find it really fun when you kill a medic that was about to übercharge someone. If you do it correctly, the other person will not have the time to get that his medic is dead and he’ll jump in the melee. Now that’s funny.

Spy : If you see a spy, shoot him! He’s your second greatest nemesis! He’ll backstab you and you won’t even have heard him coming at you. Often, while aiming at someone, you’ll shoot and an invisible spy will pop up and die. EPIC! Otherwise, my strategy if I can’t see them coming is called: Random check. If there is no action right now in your line of sight, change to your machete and turn around 180 degrees. More often than you think, you’ll find a disguised spy trying to backstab you. When he tries to kill you with normal stabs, you can say: YOU THINK THAT THIS IS A KNIFE? (show your machete) THAT, IS A KNIFE! If he manages to kill you, or even backstab you when you’re zoomed, alert your team so they can take care of it.

Snipers : The most beautiful class ever in the hands of the enemy? We have to kill him and fast! After reading this, most people WILL CHANGE TO SNIPER, so you WILL have to face one of them. If he sees you and aims at you, it’s going to be a battle of skills. If he didn’t see you, headshot him for most snipers tend to stand their ground and not move. If you are facing lots of snipers and want to take them on, refer to the numbers 1-4-6-12 of the help you saw moments before.

Good luck, and wish you are not going to face me, because I didn’t wrote the book... I wrote THE book ^_^

But don't be afraid to add your help if you think I didn't cover up some points.

I have to disagree about number 6...since standing next to a wall is a horible idea. If a soldier is shooting rockets at you, and you move "3 feet" away the splash damage from the wall and rocket will ruin your aim.

Plus spies can side stab so wall doesnt protect you

There's been a lot of competition in the sniper dept. here at ego, I'm excited in dominating you all. :)

I love playing sniper. Mostly on offense instead of defense.
I usually take the shot regardless of charge. Most quick shots wont get the kill, but it means they either have to stop on the way over or my team mates have an easier time cleaning them up.

I don't ever recall you dominating me freeflow ;)

Good guide firethem! I read the whole thing and agree with most of it. Except # 10, because if you are a good enough sniper you can follow their head :)
And i COMPLETELY agree with #11, i RARELY follow the majority of my team because i hate being in the middle of all the fighting as a sniper. I like to find places where nobody is, and sniper from there, by myself. I guess u can say that i enjoy being a loner when i play sniper :P Although, tf2 levels aren't big enough for me to really find my OWN sniping place.

Look forward to snipin with ya on warpath firethem!

add me to your friends list, come on to 2fort and we'll make it happen shall we? :D

Nice guide firethem. I rarely play sniper, as i am not very good at it. I'll have to try and emply some of your tactics and see how i do. Thx for posting it.

This is a VERY comprehensive guide, which shows how intricate the sniper class really is. I don't play it too much, but when I do, I look at the game through a whole new lens (literally!!! lol!!!).

I usually find that right before I'm about to do something epic, I get sniped in the head. Guess it's my tough luck.

how in the world did u get that many kills?

Must of been a bad server...since if I was on I would change to spy and just kill u to end your spree...
But seriously..

lol cccp, they tried that, that day, but I macheted at least 4 of em with my random check and some luck... a scout ended my spree, if you want to know ^_^

Nice guide. I wouldn't have thought to knock off the dispenser first.

Lol also ive played a good 140 hours of sniper and counting, my record is 49 pts which i got on warpath the other day :)

If you watch ThatGuy's video in the General Discussion forum, you can see him kill a heavy walking out of his spawn with one shot, uncharged.

So it is possible.

Definitely possible, and seems more likely. Though it doesn't really look like that in the vid :s

great guide - i appreciate the info! i don't play sniper very often, but i might give it a try sooner or later. i'm a medic at heart, but since EVERYONE else is currently getting their new toys, i might try getting some practice with the other classes...

I do that to a just-ubered heavy literally every day :)
