My cute little overclock...

Okay, so I bought a new [link=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835150090]heatsink[/link] earlier this week (yes, a day before it was deactivated).

My specs:
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester socket 939 (shh) with FSB at [10 x 239]

[link=http://www.machspeed.com/specs/viper/MSNV-939.html]Motherboard[/link]: Bleh, posted wrong stats on my motherboard the first time around. My bad. Click on 'Motherboard' for real stats.

RAM: 1GB PC3200 @ 199Mhz effective [2.5-4-2-8] ( PQI Turbo memory with heat spreaders with loosened timings (removed other 512MB because it was horrible) running at a 5/6 RAM:FSB (or HTT) ratio.

Power Supply: 'LOL CAME WITH CASE LOL' I honestly have no idea what brand it is any more, I just know it's 450W with like 330W on the 12V or something. I'm only running an 80GB hard drive and one optical drive, as well. 8600GT that consumes extremely low amounts of power, and two case fans that consume a couple of watts each.


In the review of that item I said that I was too scared to go beyond the 20% overclock point on my processor because of my motherboard and power supply. Truth be told, I liz-eyed. I can't figure out which one of those is the problem of the two. If I overclock it beyond 20% it gets extremely unstable, but the temps are the same as 20% and below. I've tried increasing voltage to the processor but that doesn't seem to help, and the RAM still hasn't reached the overclock point with the divider I'm using. For the past two days it's been completely stable with the 20% overclock, though. This is really bugging me, though, because I know that the cooling can allow me to go further (temps aren't going up and I've read of many people with my processor getting much higher overclocks) Any suggestions from the seasoned veterans out there?

Again, overclocking specs are:

CPU Voltage @ 3.5V for the present overclock; tried 3.75 with higher FSB and went unstable with stable temps
FSB/HTT @ 10 x 239
RAM:FSB/HTT @ 5/6(10/12) (199Mhz effective with loosened timings [2.5-4-2-8]; yes that is loosened for this module)

Oh, and budget isn't a concern for me. I just really want to figure out what I'm doing wrong, if anything.

Let it be known, everything I've ever written about clocking is for Intel. I know nothing about AMD or what bits of my knowledge apply to both realms.
 
AMD overclocking isn't much different, except the CPU controls the memory speed on the processor, so overclocking your processor will generally mean you need some flexible RAM.

As for my overclock
E8650 @ 3.6 - Stable (Can go up but too lazy to up the voltages) (Using freezer 7 pro)
 
right - and remember that each proc is different when overclocking. I have the 3800+, and i'm running it at 2.6GHz stably. If you check around online you'll find that almost everyone suggests only bumping it up to 2.4, but I was able to squeeze a little more out of it, and that is without bumping any voltages.

You'll need a good cooler if you're going to overclock much over stock. In general, the 3800+ isn't the best overclocker in the world, so don't expect to get a huge change before it starts to get unstable.

At some point, a processor just can't be overclocked anymore. Heat is not the only thing that holds it back. 20% and stable is one hell of a clock. That is probably going to be the most you are ever going to get out of it, regardless of temps. It's like watching a really tall person run. Sometimes they try to run way too fast and try to move their legs faster than they are able to handle and just trip and fall over themselves :)

Was in a hurry, sorry. 398.4Mhz effective, 199.2Mhz true clock on the RAM. Timings are still true, too. I'll try loosening them when I have more time on my hands to mess with it.
