Do you go back and play the first game in a series before playing any sequels?

I actually replayed the entire Assassin's Creed series up to the point of a new release up until ACIII. After that, I gave up. I will for some series, but not for all.

Depends on if I can afford the games before the one I play.

Definitely dependant. I actually played Bioshock Infinite before any other game in the series because it came with my GPU years ago. I tried playing 1 and 2 but actually didn't enjoy them as much, I immersed myself big time into Infinite. I did like the lore and would love to know more.

I also played Metal Gear Solid 4 before the other games. I went to a friends place a few months after it came out and he told me it was cool, so I kept going over to play (before I got my own PS3). Enjoyed it enough to start over from the beginning and became a fanatic of the series. However, I've still never completed the first one.

Some series I did play in order though would be Mass Effect, Mafia, Batman Arkham series, Portal, Darksiders, Borderlands, Half Life, and Halo! I don't invest much in series or games these days sadly, but when the right deal for the right game comes up...

Don't have anything different to add from what's been said. I like to play games in order when possible, but sometimes that isn't always the case. One example is with the witcher. Witcher 3 is the only one in the series I've played completely through. Witcher 1 I barely played and Witcher 2 I only made it about half way through.
