What's wrong with this setup?

Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS (lowest settings)
Intel Pentium D Processor 820 2.8ghz
200gb (plenty)
1gb stick DDR2 ram, one 512mb DDR

My average FPS in team fortress 2 is 20-40, CSS it's 50+.

Those. If you need better FPS, I'd definitely work on getting a better processor and video card. Any nVidia card higher than 7600, 8600, or 9600 (within their respective series) should be enough, and I'd suggest upgrading to the Core 2 series for Intel processors.
 
The video card and processor are not meant for gaming, I'd go for at least an 8600GT or higher if you're looking into TF2, but you're not going to be playing at the highest settings since it's a demanding game. As for the processor, there are some very cheap E8xxx series chips, if your motherboard can support them they are a steal.
 
Have you tried putting in an Autoexec.cfg yet try one like Wally3k or caseys config. You could also set on your launch options in steam for -DXLEVEL 70 and this will give you more fps as well (looks kinda bad but the fps is there) also make sure your cl_cmdrate, cl_updaterate are 66 and your rate is atleaste 25000

Also TF2 is not a fps is the normal respect sp FPS doesnt matter quite as much as in say DOD or CSS.
 
Someone's suggesting that a 8600 couldn't run TF2 at the highest settings? I run at the highest settings (though a lower resolution by today's standards) on TF2 and get 70+ FPS... on a 7600. An 8600 is fully capable of running TF2 on full settings on respectable resolutions. You don't need more than 60 FPS.

Also, I'm not sure where OdnsRvns gets the idea that TF2 doesn't benefit from high FPS in the same way that any other game does. It makes a huge difference when trying to work as a sniper, spy, or scout in a crowded area.
 
want the quickest and cheapest fix? pull that 512 ddr stick and plug in another gig of ddr2 (that matches the speed of your first). You should really never mix RAM types like that - your ddr2 is currently running at the speed of that ddr stick, and it's just not efficient, or good for your system.
 
Wow, Trykael, I didn't even catch the second part of that line.
Yeah, you definitely want to pull that 512, you're slowing your whole computer down that way.

I have an 8600 GTS, overclocked it about another 100 mhz, and it can only run TF2 at all medium, with 1440 x 900 resolution.
 
what i was saying is its not like CSS where when your pushing 220fps your pwning all the 30 and 40 fps. Sniper i can see but you can compensate with interp. I still recommended a autoexec .cfg.

If you can't run it on highest settings at 1440x900, try 1024x768. What's the point of having high resolution if you've got low-quality textures and models?

Meh, I just prefer higher resolutions.
And TF2 looks extremely high quality with my settings. And they're only on medium.
 
Give it a shot on Highest on 1024x768, man, you might not switch back. Seriously.
 
I know about dxlevel 70, and the rate commands. I was thinking it was my ram :)

I'd rather not get another graphics card, so should I pull the 512 stick until I can get another gigabyte?
 
Yes, pull the 512. And instead of just getting "another" gigabyte, unless you can match the brand (and/or preferred timings/voltages, speeds, etc.) I'd instead buy two gigs at the same time. That way you get two from the same manufacturer, preferably in dual-channel mode. That'll make them much more effecient and less prone to issues.
 
I'll second Ephyu here...for modern machines you should always try to run your RAM in matched pairs. having an odd stick in there just mucks everything up.

Well I think you can just upconvert your DDR1 to DDR2 with a patch. or if you Have a big USB you might be able to use it for more Pagefile.

You cannot upconvert DDR1 to DDR2 with any patch whatsoever. This would be analogous to patching a pentium 4 to a Core2Duo.

This is hardware we're talking about.

The fine line between hardware and software is being blurred more every day. Thus, you may have heard the term "firmware."

And really, didn't you hear about the C2D patch for Pentium 4 processors? Intel has it on their site somewhere, just installed it the other day and things are running great.

Gigabyte was at one time (2005) going to release a module that "upconverted" DDR RAM to DDR2...but the performance numbers were terrible, and in the end purchasing DDR2 was a lot cheaper than getting the modules. I'm not sure if they ever put them into final production, or if they are still available. As far as I know, that is the ONLY way to "upconvert" RAM, and it was specifically tailored to their motherboards, so it wouldn't work in another situation. Also, firmware will not fix this sort of problem (at least, not as far as I know).

As for adding more "pagefile," that won't fix the 512 module problem. There are two problems with that single stick...

1) mixing DDR with DDR2
2) running a single stick along with a set of paired sticks

No matter what else you do, leaving that single stick in there will slaughter your computer performance.
