What's wrong with this setup?

Firmware can only work with the hardware it is given. Firmware can not change hardware. You can't change a slot 478 processor to a 775 processor, you can't change agp to pci-e, you can't patch a dirt road into functioning like a 4 lane highway.

But seriously, I want that patch. Link?
 
I pulled the 512 and it's working fine. Thanks a lot, I'll keep in mind to try to get the exact type of RAM that's inside currently, and I'll let you all know how it goes.

what does your motherboard support? how can you even have ddr and ddr2 on one board? I think i remember back in the day of certain intel boards being a hybrid, but seriosly i would look into this to get it straight. ddr is 184 pin, ddr2 240, physically different and shouldnt work on the same motherboard.

That being said, i think you should overclock the cpu (if its possible with your mobo), get another gig of ddr2, and overclock the 8400 if you want to extend the life of your gameplay with this system. replacing the 8400 would probably make the biggest difference in game performance, but my thinks you should try to overclock (after researching if you dont know how) and save up for a new rig.
