Tech Help Total computer freeze. Save me!

Hi friendly helpers,

I just started using my computer again after a hiatus of about 2 years+. I keep getting complete freezes. Sound stops, screen freezes. Does not unfreeze untill I restart the computer.

I got a new SSD hard drive and downloaded windows 10, thinking that would fix the problem. Alas I was mistaken! I was told that processor problems are really rare but now i'm worried this is the problem.

Here is a list of my relevant hardware.

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. ga 880gm usb3 motherboard

SanDisk SDSSHD2128G
WDC WDC5000AAKX-001CAO ATA Device (plugged in but not in use)

AMD FX 4100 Quad-Core Processor

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti

A lot of freezing starts with software issues - are all your drivers up to date for the various devices?
 
Since reinstalling windows on my ssd I haven't updated the drivers (I forgot woops). But it was the first thing I did when I reinstalled windows on my old hard drive and I had the same problem.
 
Are there any common factors/times that this happens? Ex: You open a certain application and it has issues?
 
I haven't seen any specific patterns, although it is usually while running a game. However, the most recent crash was a few minutes after I finished a league game. I've had it while watching youtube and even during the start up/update screen- although this usually right after I've had to restart it from the previous crash.
 
Are all your fans operating correctly, temperatures not too high?
 
All the fans are working properly. I have a window open above the pc and cant feel any obvious signs of overheating.

Edit: The case is warm to the touch but not hot.

Isolate the issue. Basic method I do is to boot into bios and leave the PC running for as long as I need or can. If the PC crashes while in this mode, you know it's not even the software or drive that's causing the issue; it's hardware or the motherboard. That's how I was able to trouble-shoot my PC recently and isolate the issue to the video card.

How long does the PC run before it crashes? That can be another clue related to the basic method. If your PC runs for hours fine in BIOS, but it crashes within an hour when you go into Windows. Test it again to see if it crashes sooner. If it does, we may be able to identify a pattern related to the temperature/CPU/GPU overheating.

Keep trying to test and isolate the issue and find a common trait with your crashes and report back.
 
When was he last time you cleaned, blew out all the accumulated dust and crap inside the case. Is your fans on your GPU spinning properly. I know you said that your fans are working properly but you could have some dust accumulation in the fins on the heatsinks of your cpu and GPU.

But Comp is freezing common problems.
Hardware,
  • if your CPU has a built in GPU, unplug your main GPU and run your computer. if your computer freezes than your GPU is good, also try testing your GPU, stress test it.
  • If you're computer doesn't freeze, after use without the GPU, than again stress test your GPU, download the drivers manually from NVidia, and also download your audio drivers.[weird I know trust me]

Also possible causes that show the same symptoms as most hardware.

check your ram stress test it, using windows and memtest.

I cannot express that enough. Your ram will pass with memory leakage so check that.
