i just got tf2 & i thought i'd have a blast playing it. but when i tried to play it, all it did was close and say it was experiencing an inconvienence and needed to close. i asked a friend of mine & he said i was missing the materials folder. he gave me a materials folder & i tried again. it still doesnt work. after the update i could connect to a server w/ less than 2 people in it but it would be a rainbow of colors & would be really laggy. what should i do about this? my video card is just fine for the game but i have no clue what else i should try. any help is greatly appreciated.

there could be a lot of things going on - we need a few details first:
1. could you list a few of your system specs so we know for sure you meet the game requirements?
2. if your system is a little older, make sure that you have nothing else (or as little as possible) running in the background when you start up the game. you may be maxing out the system resources because too much is going on.
3. try removing and reinstalling the game. more often than not this fixes a bunch of problems.
4. have you experienced any other problems with other programs recently?
give those a try, post some details for us, and we'll try to help some more

This is a typical issue with Steam-dependent games after the initial download and install through the Steam Powered system. Normally, closing steam and rebooting your computer will overcome this issue. Following a reboot, open Steam like normal, click the "Games" tab, and open Team Fortress 2 like any other game or application in Steam.
Nothing to be worried about; I experienced the same thing when I purchased Team Fortress 2.

i have 2551 MB of RAM
my hard drive & everything else is pretty much ok its only the video card that i think has problems. thanks for your help guys! i'm in the process of doing all those things

Try the following
1) Using steam to delete the game content and then redownload it and try playing
2) Have steam verify the integrity of the game cache
3) Uninstall steam completely and reinstall making sure to delete the steam folder if it is left behind

I can easily saw that it is the video card, that card is intergrated and probably is not able to run the game. Here try this:

If you got the minimum reqs, you should be able to run the game. I don't have to the recommended reqs, but it works fine.
Try this:
1, Re-install TF2 ( right click 'TF2', and choose 'Delete local content' and re-download)
2, Contact Steam Support - I had trouble with a TF2 gift not long ago, and they solved it after 2 days.

(Remember, you must create a Steam Support Account, you cannot log in with your normal Steam Account, and remember to describe your problem)
