I'm kinda interested in finding out how low spec you can successfully run TF2. In a playable state... Not interested in the suggest minimum specs.... But if you're aware of someone running it on a creaky PC can you give me some details...

My mate is looking to give the game a go but his PC isn't exactly a Ninja... He doesn't know the specs, so I just want to get an idea of how low TF2 will go and still run well enough for an admittedly low skilled gamer.

if your friend is willing to run the game on pretty low visual settings, he should be able to get away with a pretty old machine. Here are the "official" computer requirements:

Team Fortress 2 Minimum System Requirements
CPU: 1.2 GHz Processor
RAM: 256 MB
Graphics Card: DirectX 7 capable graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

1.2GHz Proc is pretty old...assuming the computer is only 4-6 years old he should be more than golden. My guess is RAM is going to be the most important factor in his system that might hold him up.

Below are the other listed requirements...but I think most likely he'll be fine as long as he turns all the effects down or off.

Team Fortress 2 Recommended System Requirements
CPU: 2.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 512 MB
Graphics Card: DirectX 9 capable graphics card 256 MB
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

Team Fortress 2 Ideal System Requirements
For running the game smooth in 1280x1024 with High Quality graphics.

CPU: 3.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 1024 MB
Graphics Card: Radeon X800 or Geforce 6800
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

Tell him to go to www.canyourunit.com and test for Team Fortress. My machine isnt that great, it reccomends that I use the medium settings but it always lags when I do so. I play on all low and it usually runs about 30 fps.

Well im playin tf2 on a non-gaming laptop so i guess u can say that alone is pretty bad specs xD

although it has a core 2 duo proc with 2gb ram and is less than a year old ^.^

To tell you the truth, I got a Compaq Presario. :P

My video card isn't that good, too. (nVidia GeForce 6150 LE)

But, it does the work done. I'm going to buy a new computer, though. Soon..

Well... his specs were higher than the minimum and all we were getting was stuttering screens that updated every 6 or 7 seconds.... audio stuttering.. completely unplayable... Even on the lowest settings

Epic Fail :-(

Make sure all the background applications are off. When approaching low specs those applications are going to leech at memory the game needs.

I can run TF2 on my HP laptop with 1GHz proc, 1 GB ram, and Radeon 9200 Mobility Graphics (64 MB). Its a little fuzzy around the edges, but otherwise runs fine.

Just a note... any source-based game supports DX7 rendering... meaning that pretty much any system worth using can run TF2, albeit without all the eyecandy.

I do.

I had a Nvidia 7300 LE and it ran fine. But I got tired of the FPS being at 30 so I got 3x 8800 GTs and I get about 120-150 FPS. :D

I ran tf2 on an 8 yr old emachine with a radeon 9800 pro and 2 gigs of ram. :D ... granted my video card always overheated, but then again i didn't have proper cooling ;p
