streaming media

alright guys...you seem like a pretty savvy bunch. i posted this on another set of boards i frequent, but i figured i might get a better answer here

i'm attempting to stream video/audio (but mainly video) from my computer to my xbox360 so i can watch my DVDs without having to mess with a dvd player.

so, this has been my process so far: i use AnyDVD to decode my dvds to my hard drive. then i used handbrake to compress the decoded files back into an mpeg-4 file. i'm using TVersity to stream over to my xbox360.

i think i may be having a codec problem right now. i'm assuming the rip and compression went fine, but i can't view the file with anything; WMP, TVersity or quicktime (which i thought could watch mpeg-4 files). quicktime at least tries to start the movie, but it stops after about 4 seconds.

i found an article in MaxPC about streaming media to an xbox360, so i followed the instructions on removing all codecs and other programs like divx. then i reinstalled ffdshow and TVersity, but i still can't view the mp4 in Tversity. it tells me i'm missing a direcshow codec?

anyway - any suggestions at all would be great. honestly, i'm running blind here as i've never messed with streaming video before. And don't be afraid to get technical with your advice - i've been around a PC a time or two, so i don't mind

It seems the x360 supports divx/xvid natively now, I would just compress your videos into those .avi formats using a program like virtualdub. So in short: rip the movies, encode into xvid.

Most media taken from the internets is already encoded with these formats.

yeah - i'm just trying to move my dvd collection over right now. so i just need to compress to a different format? i'll try to compress to an xvid tonight and see what happens. thanks!

Try AVI(DivX) or WMV, every media format i have plays on my 360 even .mkvs.

so - the new update is...

i removed and reinstalled everything to try and get rid of the codec problem. tried compressing the file into an xvid .avi file. now at least the xbox can see the file, but no dice on actually watching it. i've got a wireless connection setup, but i was just doing a video test, so everything was set to low, and it's standard def content, so it should stream....SOMETHING.

so, after getting frustrated i deleted the file and tried re-compressing into another format. i'm off to work now, but i'll probably try again this afternoon/evening and post results. thanks for the suggestions guys!

ha! finally got it working apparently xbox360 can't see .avi files...you have to compress using an h.264 compressor into an mp4 format. life is good again!
