microphone not working

Usb or phone jack on the headset?
Sound card or on board, and if so, what kind?
Try getting updated drivers for the card from the manufacturer's site, maybe even try finding older versions of the drivers if those don't fix it.
Also, if it's a Creative card and you're using front-panel audio, disconnect the wires going to the front panel and use the rear ones, they're not manufactured properly in many models. If it's a Creative X-Fi with the fancy "universal jack" crap on it, repeatedly unplug and replug the headset while chanting your favorite voodoo spells, it might eventually work.

Assuming that your sound and audio device uses the standard color coding conventions, you will want to use the 3.5mm port that is a pink or salmon color. If you are already using that port, please follow this procedure for ensuring that the correct audio channel is being used as the Windows Recording device (instructions composed for Windows XP):
* Click "Start"
* Click "Control Panel"
* Click "Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices"
* Under "Pick a Task" click "Adjust the system volume"
* Click the "Voice" tab.
* In the "Voice Recording" section, click "Volume"
* In the new "Recording Control" window, ensure that "Recording" and "Mic Volume" are not set to mute.
* Additionally, ensure that the sliders (if not disabled) are at an appropriate level so that you're audible.

Did you update your drivers at the Creative site? Using the ones that came with the card rarely work with Vista. Hell, the ones on the disc with the card rarely work at all.
And I wasn't kidding about the rapid plugging and unplugging and voodoo. Well, maybe about the voodoo bit, but it can't hurt. Many X-Fi cards have a "universal jack" on the card that's supposed to allow it to adapt to what gets plugged in, when it's usually just used for a microphone. This jack almost never works properly in any case I've had to deal with one of these damn cards, and fixing the problem's a crapshoot. Only thing that's ever worked for anyone I've troubleshot the issue for is to make sure all the related drivers are up to date, disable on-board sound, and then repeatedly plug the mic in, test it, unplug it, wait, plug it back in, test it, etc. Eventually it'll work, but it's not guaranteed to last.

Go to you volume panel - not the windows control but the creative one in the task bar and make sure you assigned the right setting to FlexiJack mode. Mic in/line is what you want.

I've had this problem before, happened to me in XP and Vista. I forget exactly how to fix it, but I think you need to mute the microphone in audio properties, and make sure "Line In" is enabled.

Ok this is starting to frustrate me a loooot. Damn Vista! So i tihnk my mic jack is not beeing picked up. In the image below its wtf where is the pinc jack???Windows has the same issue doesnt pick up my jack. In the playback it says that my speakers are working, although i have none plugged in, and my headset is not plugged in. same for the mic, it says its not plugged in but there is an image there. My guess is that my headset is picked up as speakers. Any idea how i can get the mic jack to get picked up?
I reinstalled the drivers.Didnt help. Any ideas?
ps: i can only either selcet inline or microphone. is that "normal" if not where else can i enable in line?when i selecet inline in the creative window nothing changes.

This problem would be much easier to troubleshoot if i had the computer. Do you have the expansion bay addition? If so use the mic in that jack see if it works. I would try different brands like Logitech see if it works. Give me the exact model of headset - does it have one jack for both mic and headphones or is it a split jack, soundcard - x fi extreme but do you have the expansion bay addition, is it x fi extreme gamer or audio or extreme audio pcie, number of pci, pciex1 slots and how many of them are occupied, do you have an on board audio card and is it disabled in the Bios.
If all fails just grab an USB headset and skip the whole thing, though the 3d feature on the Xfi works amazing on my Shure EC4 headphones, which you might lose.

so its a sennheiser PC350 headset. The soundcard is a soundlaster x-fi extreme audi and its onboard. i tried a diffrent headset. ih ad an old logitech one same problem.
This problem would be much easier to troubleshoot if i had the computer. Do you have the expansion bay addition? If so use the mic in that jack see if it works. Your x fi is built in to your motherboard? That is a very nice headset, which is a shame for what i will say.
So you plug one into the mic jack and the other jack in the output jack? First off one of the plugs will be useless because like my Bose speakers it will not work on the 3 jack Creative connection - orange, green, black. (See image bellow) From what i see you can get the mic or the headphones to work, but not both. To make it work you need a speaker output and a mic input, which you get on the X fi I/O drive and you can get but it will not work on your card.
You are left with three options i think. Double check the software settings. Two call creative and if it is in warranty ask for a replacement. Three, find some one with a card like yours and try your headset on theirs see if it works. Then do one and two. But from the picture of the headset, which has a split plug one for the mic one for the headphones, and that of the sound card i do not see it working. Which is a shame as that is the king of headsets. I have been wrong before but the 3 jack connection pretty much kills it.

Searched a little for a picture of the connections on a creative mic headset and could not find it. Look at a creative connection see what they have rigged up, the Creative ones should work on yours question is what is different?

Ait i want to thank all of you who tried to help me resolve this issue. Creative just sucks at costumer support. but i fixed it. Drum roll i got rid of vista and put xp back on it and would you know wow it works like perfectly. So thanks again. Peace

Give me the way you assigned jacks to your sound card please. I want to try my Bose that way. I will guess mic blue, headphones grey/black. Peculiar that it would work on your x fi extreme audio and not on my x fi platinum.
