+2.5 V Rail...HELP

i have Speed Fan and it is telling me that my +2.5 V is running at a whopping 1.4V!!!! i just got a 350W power supply cause old one crashed(idk what W it even was because it didnt say) anyway it never went that low...is this a good thing?is this a bad thing? ty for any help
 
You opened the old one up? Sometimes there is a fuse in there that you can replace and get running again.

Do a stress test by running a ton of things at once - really load the cpu and other components that use power. If you crash then you might have a problem. It may be that SF is reading the voltage wrong, or the load voltage. If you have a DMM you can actually test it to see what it puts out, but thats tricky if you don't know what to do.

i am just goin to wait it off until i need a bigger one....it is runnin better than before w/ that old 450 W...WeIrD!...but if my PS does die what will happen? catch fire? Explode?? Smoke like crazy??? Do nothing????
 
The fuse should burn out, though it can happen that before it does it lets a surge through basically killing some components. If it is hot in the case and the room you keep it in change it before. And if you have a ton of things plugged in with it on the same circuit change it, i would do it right away. Loaded parallel circuits does bad things to resistance, which can lead to bad scenarios. The more devices the lower resistance, but voltage is the same across components in parallel, so current must increase - going off Ohm's law voltage =current*resistance. Most things have 15 amp fuses. I forget what your psu has, but once you break 15 amps you are asking for big trouble. 50 bucks or so on a new PSU can save you money.


The bad part of the low rating is that you might not be supplying enough voltage to components that need it and you get crashes, data loss, slow performance. If i spend 1000 dollars on something it better run like a charm, make the most out of your investment. You want to have some slack as things fluctuate with temperature and other factors. Did you do a stress test?
 
did a stress test for 12 hrs and nothing happened out of the ordinary...that is why i am so conufsed...do you think that speedfan is reading the voltage wrong?
 
it's possible...it's also possible that the rail just isn't going to give the correct voltage, but that your components aren't being affected by it...yet. i'd try to get ahold of a multi-meter and do a reading with that to find out if speedfan is wrong or not.

and i know right now you're not really worried about it, but a 350watt PSU is definitely lower than what you should be running. i would suggest at LEAST a 450watt PSU ... preferably a 550 or 600 to be honest. right now you may not see any problems, but a PSU that is too small will lead to a much shorter lifespan on all of your computer parts - especially if it isn't sending out the correct voltage to everything.

as far as what could happen if it dies...yes to everything :-) i've seen them smoke...i've seen extreme cases where they've caught on fire. most likely, it will just quit working - you may hear a pop or smell the magic blue smoke, but a good portion of the time they just quit functioning properly.
 
interesting...is there any other program that can read those rails and voltages other than speed fan? i have looked but havent found any
 
I posted one in the link in my first post. Everest i think. DMM is the best solution, like i said you should know what you are doing for that.

trykael, i am running a 400 watts psu on a intel 3.4 ghz HT with 4 gigs of ram, one internal hd, srx pci adapter, video card ati 24 something, ati HD tv pci tuner, x fi platinum with expansion bay, dvd rom, and a Zalman 120 mm cpu cooler. HP custom build it with that PSU. OEM PSUs might have different specs because its been running well for 3 years. I am starting to hear some noise from time to time and will replace with an Antec or Corsair about 500 watts when i find a good deal. The power rating you posted are the continuous power or peak power?

Post your specs Sharp, please.
 
Intel P4 2.6 GHz...2GB of DDR RAM...Ati Radeon X1950 PRO...dvd ROM drive...160GB HDD...cheap 14 dollar sound card...that is about it...nothing fancy just enough to run cryis on medium settings ;)
 
I never trust speedfan, but I don't know what you're running either. 350 is low man, but not impossible by yesterday's standards. If you're kickin a moderate to serious gaming system you need either a good 400 watt or decent 500 watt and if you're overclocking you need a good 500 watt min. If you're looking at possible replacements at all, sell the 350 and get a new corsair (I'm not a rep :)). These things were on sale and I love mine more than pcpcool.

Edit: Sorry, just saw the last page and your post. A good 350W psu should work with that system. I don't know what is good in the 350 range, but johnnyguru.com probably does :).
 
The only hog i his system is the video card. I would have expected that would need more then 350, but it runs so it looks ok.

eh - it's more than you think ;-) save up and get a bigger PSU as your next major purchase...nothing cheap. a bad psu drains years out of the life of your pc components...
 
yeah i was thinkin about it...wont be here for a couple of wks be out of town so i will worry about it then
