You can do it with wine, but dang, these guys make it easy. Well worth the $40 if you are spending most of your time in Linux, but still need to run Windows apps. I'm using this all the time when I'm coding and jump into a game for a break.

Wine has recently surpassed them in terms of game performance. Wine is actually pretty simple, but considering the OP is new to unix I don't really know any easy way to describe how to use it. I would probably start with the wine FAQ, and I don't know if TF2 works with wine either. In the mean time I would suggest reinstalling windows with Avg Anti Virus, imo the best anti virus there is.

Ah - codeweavers
*is* wine. They also include all of the stuff that usually takes a bit of elbow grease and make it easy. That, and they provide formal support if you need it. Works great - when the new raptors make it out, I'll do a WinXP-64 vs Linux+Wine benchmark. You can do it without -- just saying, if you are new to Linux and are looking for a brain dead easy way to run games and other apps, check out the codeweaver variant.

They are based on wine, but an older version they refined and tweaked. The newest version of wine has better support and better framerate ironically, defeated by their parent program
