How does one play medic well?

Lets see, my medic tactics are
If I'm not alone then I'm probably healing someone.
Always keep everyone in my immediate area at 150% health.

If I'm in a combat pair then as long as we are not ubering keep my patient between me and the enemy.
If we are ubered then I may be along side or in front of my patient but not in his line of fire. (helps to ensure sentries target you and give your patient juggle free fire.

I do not follow team mates into suicidal situations without an uber.

the kritzkreig is a situational strength. I've found it most useful for distance and not line of fire situations.
(eg soldiers taking out defense at C in gravelpit. Demos Lobbing grens from ledge in warpath. Combining with ubered demo/sold/heavy)

The bone saw is your friend. I find that the needle guns are mostly useful when fighting pyros or for spies trying to back up and shoot you. Other than that I usually just bone saw my way in)

Arbitrary:

Lets sit down and have a little medic to medic. (No don't lite the candles.)

First off, um why did you make this thread? You probably know more about medicing than anyone else. (120hrs) My stats: 43 points, 38 assists, 11,000 heal, 2.8mil total heal, 77 hours. Nothing real great because I'm wreckless and don't worry about "buffing my stats".

"I am on FIRE" - Healing Priorities
My priorities are: player in combat, then player on fire (leave the burning heavies till the last, they like the heat)- medics on fire first, then injured players - badly hurt medics first. Then buffing anyone around. On Warpath, I'll take care of anyone on the hallway between 2-3 and those who are spamming around the corner between 1-2.

"I am the Ubermensch" - Ubers
Uber a demo or pyro. Occasionally I'll Uber a heavy but that is usually only on Goldrush stage 1 in the hallway after cp1. Demos take out SGs. Pyros cause panic and retreating. On Warpath, at the beginning of a game Uber a pyro when you reach the bridge and rush as far back as possible. You can make it all the way to their first point, resupply, get another Uber and rush up from behind. It takes a good pyro to do this. (I'll recommend AzzNik.) Uber timing really depends on your relationship with the Uberee. If you take Nutz or Azz, hit it when they call for it, (sometimes I hold out longer if I can see that it is safe. i.e. beginning of Warpath I usually wait until we are about out of health) I trust them because they know what they are doing. (I think.) Otherwise it is really up to you. 1/4 second early is better than being sniped, but that mostly depends on the situation.

Before taking anyone on an Uber run, observe them and make sure that they are either shooting, reloading, holding a weapon other than the primary weapon. This way you can be sure they are not a spy.

"I'm prepared to do whatever it takes" - being offensive.
Follow the eGO rules, no offensive language. However change up the balance of the game. Make the medic an offensive class, not a support one. (In your face Valve.) Get up there on the front lines and heal those you find there. The longer they live the more death you can bring to the other team. (Thats really what a medic wants; dead opponents.) If your are retreating from a pyro without anyone else to heal, use the Blutsaugher to kill the pyro and gain enough live to roll on the floor and put out the fire. Other than that leave the Blutsaugher in your pocket. The Ubersaw is your friend, keep it on quick switch all the time. First reason, spy killing. That is the easiest way to get quick Ubers. I'll take a demo on an Uber run, fall back, kill two spys, and when the demo is just out of spawn hook up with him and go out on another Uber; all within 30 seconds. Anytime I see someone running around with 1/2 health, I'll give them a smack with the saw to check them. Second reason the Ubersaw is your friend. After taking an Uber in and there is no easy way out, pullout the Ubersaw and hack away. If you kill someone and you are under heavy fire, switch to the heal gun and Uber your way back to safety. Everytime I do that, the other team really hates me.

I'm Still Alive - Staying alive
Don't follow a suicidal pyro out into a moving field of dots. You'll kill yourself. The pyro will do his thing for 3 seconds then die, don't worry about it, your team needs that Uber your making. Basically, stay alive but be aggressive. If you die, meh.

"You are trying me patience" - Communication
Having a mic is key, but not necessary. Tell the uberee what you want them to do, where to go. You are the sole owner of the Uber, if they don't want to do what you want to do, find someone else. But a mic is not always required. Since Nutz has his mic all the time, if I don't have mine, I'll just hook up with him and follow him around with my Ubers. He always goes for the SGs, so no surprises. (At least for me not having a mic doesn't make me a bad medic, I just only Uber certain players.)

"Oktoberfest" - Having fun
Just because you are the QB of the team, this doesn't mean you can't have fun. If you feel like you can outsmart a bullet, go beat them with saw. Mix it up, have fun.

/medic to medic.

!Woodstock!

I have nothing to say to this, because for me to give you medic advice would be like the QB of the local high school team giving some pointers to Joe Montana.

Well, I made the thread on the basis that I'm not entirely sure about how beneficial my medic tactics are for my team. You can raise medic stats through the roof by standing in tunnels and healing people, or standing in spawn and charging uber. I try to do a bit of defense and attack, but, for example, retreating post-uber (and maybe living, maybe dying) could be less useful than those extra few seconds of healing an ally before they die. I quite often abandon heal targets, mess up ubers by trying to quickly heal someone as my ally gets ready to charge in, delay a second too long on uber timing, and all sorts of other things. Also, I'm never sure exactly what constitutes proper use of the ubersaw.

To boot, I'm in my element more on warpath than most other maps, due to experience and map design.

Also, those questions were often rhetorical questions of extreme degrees. :D

Also, isn't it "ubermensch"?

A good medic can change a game around. The most important advice I can give is to communicate with your teammates and especially your other medics. Pair your uber with other ubers and almost any point can be captured. We do this a lot on warpath now so even if there are three SG's set up with the right combos the point can be taken.

Also when you uber a demo to blow up a SG. Run out before the demo this will cause the gun(s) to focus on you and give the demo a cleaner shot at the target.

I think it's hard to be perfect at getting the perfect uber timing. We all want to hold off until that very last second that it's needed. Problem is so many things can go wrong like splash damage from around the corner that you wanted to get past before popping the uber.
Too early and too late are always bad, but it's pretty impossible to find that perfect time with so many other things going on. You lose a few, you waste a few. It happens. Follow your gut.

I have one bit of advice to you arbitrary, glue yourself to a good sniper, you will get untold amounts of points, in addition uber him constantly. Yes I am taking this away from our session tonight...

Arbitrary,

You are "9" of 112,000+ players and you want advice on being a medic. :)

I think you should be teaching the classes to us lesser medics. I'd show up!

Thatnks, but I'm not exactly a good sniper anyways.

Ok, I guess I'll be writing up a medic guide. It'll be a while though :/

My hlx score going up over 1000 points and me earning first, do no harm seem to disagree saying you are actually a great sniper...
