The end of Donner

Hi everyone, this is probably no shock to anyone but, we have ended an era and closed the Donner/Kalt/Anzio server. We now only have Avalanche. There are no plans to change Avalanche in any way or for it to go away - we are still in the top 3 and busy for 18-20 hours a day.

I have to admit that I never was on the Donner server. But it hurts to see servers go as this is an idication of DoD:S dying a slow death (as more and more servers fade away).

It was certainly a fun map! Yes, we can't help it, the game is old... The population was holding steady for quite a while but lately its going down. Not stopping our server but, the game as a whole... you can see it here:

Certainly was pretty fun! I would have enjoyed a full server too, and maybe a few rounds on Kalt.

Too bad Valve doesn't refresh it like what happened with CS:GO - same game, better graphics, etc. would bring people back for sure.

I heard something at one point that the developers all moved on to different projects within Valve, so they just sort of let it die off. Too bad too, they could have done a lot. I guess since it hasn't enjoyed the same massive popularity that CS and TF2 have, we don't get much. Still kicking for now though.

if you would like, I could provide you with a server. I am running a few here in germany that have more than enough capacity to host a dod server . But they would be located in germany, which maybe would be nice for the european players that have a very high ping on the US Servers .

While a nice offer, it is not an issue of lack of resources or money - we simply haven't had our other servers fill in a long time. Kalt originally sat empty for a long time, along with Donner, so we merged them together (and threw Anzio in). It's effectively sat completely empty since the beginning of the year, unfortunately. We used to have a lot more members who would regularly fill these servers, up until just over a year ago. Combined with the game slowly dying...

At this time, Avalanche is set to be our final server. We haven’t been able to get anyone filling other maps for over a year, and almost 2 years since we were able to host events. I checked a few days ago and DoD averages less than 400 players at a time each day - and declining monthly It’s unfortunate and I do hope that another game comes along at some point that fills the hole and maybe can bring our great community together again.

Since our game is in decline too, we’ve been asked to cut servers and not add any unless we see a demand for it - eGO will use those server resources for new games they try or projects.

It is rather sad to see Donner go. I remember many late nights in there with old eGO members. All of the servers were hard to let go of. Strand was my home and i spent so many mornings in Flash With Goomba. Unfortunately times have changed and the people have too.
