RELEASE DETAILS
The newest release to the Tomb Raider series is here to bring some new adventures to those that follow the path of Lara Croft. Square Enix, the publisher, worked together once again with Eidos Montr?al, the developer, to bring players the next game in the series. Eidos Montr?al, which is actually a subsidiary of Square Enix, are the developers of the Deus Ex games as well. The release of this game was pretty hyped at E3 back in June so I’m sure many of you know it’s coming soon.
Now, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a sequel to Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider (2016). It does follow the narrative of those two games, so it might be pretty important for y’all to have played those before or watched gameplay to understand fully.
But it’s time to tuck your head between your knees and prepare yourselves for Lara’s new adventure.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be releasing on September 14th, on the PC, Xbox One, and PS4 for $59.99. Now, there are a few things available with the Standard Edition:
STANDARD EDITION - $59.99
But if you wanna splurge a little to get more bonuses, you can also buy the following versions:Game
Additional Skills Booster Pack
Exclusive Steam Wallpaper
DIGITAL DELUXE EDITION - $69.82
CROFT EDITION - $89.06Game
Standard Edition Items
Official Soundtrack
Additional Weapon/Outfit #1
It’s important to note that if you buy the Digital Deluxe or Croft Editions, you get access to the game 48 hours before those that just buy the Standard Edition. And you know, that 48 hours totally begins today.Game
Digital Deluxe Edition
Additional Weapon/Outfit #2
Additional Weapon/Outfit #3
Season Pass
Now, there are a few things to notice about what comes with the Season Pass. You get access to:
7 challenge tombs
7 weapons, outfits, and skills
Various different narrative side missions
And while players may be able to buy the DLC as it’s released to the public, one of each of those categories above will be exclusive solely to those that own the Season Pass. So if you buy the DLC individually, you’ll only be able to buy 6 of each of those things listed. All of the Season Pass content will begin releasing on a monthly basis starting in October 2018 so it’d be smart to get that Season Pass early.
STORY
It’s important to keep in mind that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is taking place two months after what went down in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara, you know that pretty legit archeoligist that we’ve played multiple games and watched movies about, was like “I want to find more connections to my father.” Which is why Shadow of the Tomb Raider is all about her heading down to Latin America in search of a Mayan relic.
Now, this relic is called the Key of Chak Chel. But too bad she’s not the only one in search of the relic. Trinity, a pretty badass group of neanderthal thugs, totally wants to take control of the relic in order to “reshape the world” and have it run the way they wish it too. Which I guess is to have the world without sin and weakness but we all know sometimes it’s okay to show signs of weakness. Plus it’s definitely okay to be a little sinful.
Except there’s one little itty bitty tiny minor detail someone forget to tell Lara about this relic. That “hey, if you disturb the relic, you totally set off the Mayan apocalypse and bring world ending doom to everyone. But, yeah! Let’s go grab some margaritas and hunt for it.”
GAMEPLAY
Shadow of the Tomb Raider falls under the action adventure game category and is played solely in third person perspective (including during those oh so important cutscenes), just like its predecessors. But this time players are trekking through all of the environments that are found across South America. Yeah, you’re not just limited to one spot or area within a country. You get the whole continent to traverse, which is being considered one of the largest playable maps in the Tomb Raider franchise.
But there’s something special about this map. It’s not just getting to explore the jungle and the underwater crevasses and hope to not die. Players can uncover a sekrit hidden city, Paititi, and have lots more to do. There are several main narrative and side quests that revolve around the history of Paititi, which allows players to actually learn about the city. It’s a way for the creators to show the city the way they want it to be seen.
Square Enix and Eidos Montr?al are introducing a completely new barter system to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, just to make it the city more interactable for players. You’ll be able to trade for resource, grab new or upgraded weapons, or even salvage parts within the city limits to develop Lara and improve her skill level. But it’ll be pretty important for players to understand that Lara will also be learning her own limits in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
NOTABLE NEW FEATURES
But there were some improvements made to the gameplay after the developers learned from Rise of the Tomb Raider.
SWIMMING
Swimming has been updated to make the controls easier and so that Lara is able to hold her breath longer. They decided to get smart this time and add underwater air pockets to improve the swimming duration. So hey, maybe some of you will die less now.
RAPPEL DOWN
How about players now get an easy way to head down a cliff besides just jumping off the edge? The ability to rappel down using a rope was added as well.
STEALTH
You know when you’re in the middle of combat and you just really want that couple second break to remember what keys you need for your combo? Well, stealth is now improved so that if Lara leaves her enemies’ line of sight, she is able to disengage from the current fight. Players will also be able to use mud as camouflage and casually creep out enemies when Lara appears and disappers.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN DIFFICULTY
Players can choose what difficulty they have for their expedition, all the different puzzles and quests, and the fights Lara will go through. It’s okay if you choose the highest difficulty, die, and switch to the lowest, no one will judge you...well, maybe just a little.
IMMERSION MODE
There might also totally be a new aspect within the game. So you know how in any game that there’s a story where you have to stomp your way through town and pass all these NPCs? Well, Immersion Mode allows players to hear all those NPCs’ conversations in their native languages. So wherever you are in the game, you’ll hear the NPCs speaking their own, native languages to give a more realistic feel. When you turn Immersion Mode off, the NPCs speak in whatever language you have chosen for the voice overs that happen in game.
