I usually play bass and generally clean, unless the song calls for it. When we played the Sopranos theme by Alabama 3, I used a wah for the bass.....kind of cool.
When I play lead, the usual effects are chorus with a touch of distortion, depending on the tune. Maybe a phaser as well.
