Dual screen

I'm trying to set up my new dual screen setup but I don't think it's possible for the way I want it.

I'm running two screens off of 1 7950 GT card. One's 1280x1024, the other 1280X768. What I'm trying to do is set it up that when I'm in game I can run a game on the 1280X1024, but be able to switch to something one the other screen WITHOUT minimizing the game. As of now if I'm in game and I scroll over to the other screen to use another program (say rcon), the game will minimize on the main screen.

Anyway to avoid this other than using a 2nd graphics card?

You will have to play the game in "window" instead of full screen in order to be able to do this. I have done this myself with CSS in the past. In order to do this, go to options, select the video tab, and under screen mode select "run in a window". You will surrender a little bit of you screen size, but this will allow you to do what you want to do.

or get yourself another vid card and hook the second monitor to it. Then you can run the first in normal mode and the second can be used like you want.

For several years I ran one monitor off a pair of SLI nVidia and my second monitor off an ATI card. The behavior of 'full screen' applications is governed by windows and the applications themselves, it has very little to do with the hardware you're running. Full screen applications will always open on the 'primary' desktop as defined in your settings and will minimize when you go to your secondary desktop. As long as you are running a single box, you will be stuck with this issue unless you are running your games in a window.

It's pretty much impossible to due because of how the operating system works, there's really no work arounds, when I ran dual screen I had one window for IRC to read conversations, but if I would want to participate that would take me away from the game even though it would still be displayed on the left side of the screen. There's no way I know of to get around this, save for an operating system that may need third party programs to pull off such a task (Maybe a *nix OS)

because all major FPS's like tf2 and cod4 use fullscreen mode only there's no way around it. If it was used in a single window you could simply drag it where you wanted it on either screen. Alt + tab was designed to be the only way to go back to the desktop on windows that I know of.
