Having some problems with new Memory

I recently installed new memory, I know it works, because sometimes it reads and other times it doesn't. Which is the problem.

It works, I turn it off overnight, and when I come back, it only reads half of the total memory. I open it up, take out the new memory, put it back in, in the exact same way, and it works.

Sometimes however, it doesn't work, and I just do that a few times, and then it works.

Any idea whats wrong?

That sounds really strange. First things first, you should probably run a memory test on it. Check out www.memtest86.com

What type of memory is it? I know Corsair has a lifetime warranty. I ran memtest on my RAM, told them one stick was bad, and then they sent me 2 new sticks of RAM for free. You might look to see what type of warranty your manufacturer offers if the memtest comes back with errors.

Its Patriot DDR2.

My dads really good with computers, and he said it should be fine.

Could be a few things... is the memory read when put into other slots if available? Is your motherboard updated to the latest bios? How much RAM do you have and which operating system?

My computer has 4 slots for memory, and 2 slots are already taken. It requires pairs of memory, and yes the motherboard is updated.

It came with 1 GB of ram, but I added 2 GB on XP.

The motherboard maxes out at 4GB, and I should have 3GB, but literally half the time, it only reads 1.5GB

Try swapping the mem sticks, put the bigger banks in the ones where you had the original memory and vise versa. Some motherboards want to see the bigger type first. I assume the memory is at least of the same speed and all. If this differs, this could cause some real problems as well. What is the model # and make of your MoBo, and what is the memory you have (Make and type)?

Try having the ram in a non dual channel configuration and see if it fails to recognize. By the way 32 bit operating systems often don't report RAM correctly, and cannot read more than 3.33ghz, you should be able to recognize at least 2GB though...
